FARMERS' CLUB.
A meeting of the Farmers' Club ra held On Saturday afternoon. In the absence of the President Mr T.'Chamberlain' was voted to the chair, An offer was received from Messrs Lowes & lorns for the use of their yards for the first show, in the event of a Pastoral Society being formed, and it was resolved to accept the offer. Messrs E. and T. Chamberlain and .Hesßey were appointed a Committee to arrange with them; ... Some discussipn took place as. to. whether a Pastoral and (Agricultural Society should or should not be formed at once, andthe : Secretary read the letter from Mr W, Booth in reply to the, one forwarded, asking the Wairarapa Society to hold every alternate show in Masterton. The Chairman suggested that they should call a public meeting to consider the matter. < Mr Caselberg thought they should take steps in that direction, but he wished to know whether 'it was the intention of the Club to form itself into a Pastoral Society. Messrs Heron, R. Welch, and A. W. Hogg thought the Society should be a separate one. Mr B. P. Perry said if tlioy confined the Society 'to the members of the Farmers' . Club it would be a failure. They would get ample support if they started. They need sot go into it very largely at once. If they went into it in a suitable way it would be bound to grow. He was surprised that Mr Booth should 'have said that the Carterton shows had been fairly successful. He himself considered them a failure. At any ratq, while they, had not paid prizes of any extraordinary value, they had run into debt to the extent of about £7OO. That was about the only thing in which they had been successful. He thought that the subscription should be only 10s in place of £l, as in the other society. Mr Caselberg asked whether if it were possible to hold the show so as not to clash with Carterton, would it not be better for both. Several members answered in the affirmative.
Mr Hogg moved. That circulars be issued aud forwarded to the settlers of the district asking whether they are willing to become members and exhibitors, and ascertain what stock or produce they are likely to exhibit, and that a committee consisting of Messrs Caselberg, the Secre : tary, and the mover be appointed to prepare circulars and convene a meeting for the formation of a Show Committee and appointment of office bearers. The motion was seconded by Mr B. P. Perry and carried. Mr Day asked whether anythinu had been done in the way of poisoning sparrows.
.The Secretary stated that grain was being prepared by the local chemists, and he believed it was proving very successful. Several members also mentioned instances which had ceme under their notice, in which poison had been laid with the greatest success. Mr Hogg considered that undivided efforts were of little use. At Ashburton they had got rid of a lot of sparrows and now had a plague of paroquets. Messrs B. Hunt, T. P. Girdwood, R. S. Hawkins, and T. L. Thompson, were elected members' of the Club. Messrs W, lorns and H. McArdle were proposed as members. This concluded the business.
