Sir Peter Scratchley High Commissioner of New Guinea, has asked the Victorian Government lor a loan of £20,000 without interest, for tho purpose of adminissration, the amount tobe repayable at some future time. Mr Service, however, has declined to increase the contribution already promised by Victoria, until he has been fully apprised of the intentions of the Imperial Government-, with regard to New Guinea. New York, July 23, General Ulysses S. Grant died to-day, at the age of G3, London, July 23. The revised Budget introduced by Sir Michael Hicks Beach, Chancellor of the Exchequer, was adopted to-night by the House of Commons. The cargo of frozen meat, ex ship Lady Jocelyn, consisting of carcases shipped at Napier, has been examined, and found to be in good condition. Sydney, July 24. The Ministry have given an unqualified denial to the statement of Mr Farnell that the present administration would break up before long. The Ministers state there is nothing to warrant such an expression of opinion as that given by Mr Farnell. Melbourne, July 24. The police' authorites have announced their determination to suppress cash betting on racecourses within this Colony. This announcement has caused considerable comment in sporting circles. The following horses havo been scratched for the Melbourne Cup—Duke of \'thol, King of the Gipsies, and Revenge.

London, July 24. It is announced that the marriage of Princess Beatrice will" be solemnised in Whippington Church. Her Majesty the Queen will give the bride away. Preparations are being made for great public rejoicings on the occasion. In the House of Commons last night, the amendment introduced by Mr Jesse Collmgs, M. P. for Ipswich, into the Medical Relief Bill came up for discussion and was carried by a large majority, in spite of the opposition of tho Government. Sir Michael Hicks Beach thereupon declared that he declined to be answerable for the Bill in its present state, Her Majesty the Queen has been pleased to bestow the Order of the Garter upon Princo Henry of Battonburg.
