There was quite a little breeze at the meeting of the Land Board yesterday, According to the Evening Press, Mr McCardle wished to ask a personal question, At a recent meeting of the Pahiatua Road Board, it hud been stated that Mr Marchant had said that if he had been asked to make a survey required by that Board he would nave done it. This survey Mr McCardle had asked Mr Marchant to have made, hut had been refused, Mr Marchant said, in reply, that he had never said any thing of the sort; he had always been of opinion that the survey should not be made, In plain words, Mr McOaudle tried to insinuate that a gentleman occupying a high and responsiblejpublic office had shown that he would be prepared to sacrifice' his public duties for the sake of spiting Mr McCardle. The charge is of a very grave nature, and neither side should allow the matter to rest where it is at present. If such was made by a member of the Pahiatua Road Board, then Mr McCardle should namehim.so that he and Mr Marchant may be brought face to face. If, on the other hand, the name is not given, then Mr McCardle must remain open to the charge of having made a statement which ho cannot substantiate, The question, in its indirect bearing, is a very important one, hecause civil servants who make assertions of this kind are not fit (o retain their nosi tionsj* while, on the other band, they shoulduotbe deprived of auopportunity lo defend themselves.
