POLYGAMY SCARED AND HURT.
It does, indeed, look aa if a genuine panic had set in in Monnondom, Nine polygamous "saints" lwve been arraigned before Federal Judges, within a few months, and convicted of plural marriage and now abide behind prison bars, and not so much as one wife to console them; and their heretofore untroubled brethren now shake in consternation' Some have fled to safe hiding places in the Territory; some have sought security in Mexico; and not a few, it is said', have gone to Europe—sent ostensibly by the Church authorities "on a mission" for recruiting the Church. Even President John Taylor, highest in power of all, is reported missing, as also are two of his chosen Councillors—Cannon and Smith, ten of the twelve Church apostles, and scores more of the very elect, including Brother Penrose, editor of the Church Organ. It is believed tliat pot a polygamous Mormon remains ' openly to-day in Salt Lake. • '
All this heroic treatment of the polygamy question, we may assume, came from the formation, last year, of a Grand Jury, in whish was not one polygamist. . Conviction after oonviction of polygamists followed. To Judge Zane, tho new Chief Justice of Utaji, apd District great credit fqr this is due. Hqiil oilier officials done their duty there would have been leps for tjjejo gentlemen to undertake; hut great as was their task, and boldly as for a time they were defied, they have wrought nobly, and with gratifying results. One more year of such active effort will orush polygamy out of exsistence and curtail the dangerous power of tho Mormon Church where it is confessedly strongest,a nd will do much to prevent the Church's futrther growth..
There can be no new localisation of the Mormon spirit and practico. California, for which Brigham Young and few&Ay were bound Valloy, j'p a state of good age, and would prohibit tltejr occupancy, In Arizona, where the Hormone have done Home colonizing, five of thorn li&ve lately been sent to prison (including three bishops) in imitation of Utah's hew legal policy, Idaho proposes the same line of action, and will not extend her hospitalities. Catholic Mexico offers jkj allurement's.' Clearly a,n|iorei '"in "the territory it jis inac|e' farnpua,' pst hold by its ai}cWe, even tq go of Church and Stafg and the putting away of thogo things' that; threaten the State's welfare, The slight reference which President Cleveland made to it in his inaugural speech, encourages our hope that his administration will actively continue what Mr Arthur so excellently betran—'American Reformer,' !
