The Benevolent Society had a discussion on a difficult subject at its last meeting, namely, what to do -with able-bodied men who will *not work, but allow their families to drop on the hands of the benevolent, and then share the food they receive with them; and as has always been the case with similar institutions in other parts of the colony, it had to be dropped without anything definite being done. Unfortunately, the law, as it now stands, is not calculated to assist the benevolent. The man appears to havo a right to enter the house which is uufortunato enough to own him as its head, and to take and eat whatever he may find in it. If the loafer is not to be fed, I why, the only filing to bo done is to allow his family to starve, The only way to treat men of this description is to have them up as persons who have no visible means of support, and if the ability to work, together with the aversion to it, is proved, the prosecutors may depend upon it that the Magistrate will assist them to get over the difficulty for ut month or two, Judging by the statements whi'tb were freely made during the discussion, there is an eminently tit subject at large. Evidence should not be wanting, and if so, it is worlh making an experiment.
