FOOTBALL.
GREYTOWN V CARTERTON. The above match, which was looked forward to with some interest, eamo off in Cuff's paddock in Greytown on Saturday laßt, Tha weather was rather threatening, but still there were a good number of spectators present, including a sprinkling jjf the fair sex. Owing to a riflo match in Featherston, Greytown was unable to put their best team in the field.' Webster, Cameron, Tocker, Desmond, and Wenham were conspicuous by their absence, The following were the teamsCarterton—Forwards, F, Peters, T. Moore, A. Moore, Mercer, C. Reid, C. Fairbrother (Captain), C. Smith, Ginders, R, Fairbrother; quarter backs, J. Humphries and Rutherfurd; half backs, F. Fairbrother and Ewen; back J. Moore: Greytown— Forwards, C. Beard (Captain), E. Udy, H. Mitchell, Waud, H. Humphries, J. Maguire, H, Udy, F. Fisher, and Tinga; quarter backs, J, Beard, A. Udy, R, Hirschberg; half backs, A, Beard, and D. Baillie; Back, J. Terry. At 4 o'clock the teams, took the field, Greytown defending the Eastern goal. As nnon as the word was given, Maguire kicked off, the ball landing close to the Carterton goal, the Greytown forwards following up well. Reid (Carterton), got the ball, but was soon collared, and a scrimmage ensued. As soon aa the ball i was out, F, Fairbrother got it, and had a good kick, landing it in touch, close to the Greytown quarters. As soon as it was thrown in, Fairbrother collared it and made tracks, but was called back, and a scrimmage took place. The leather coming out, Fairbrother again tried a run, but was collared by J. Terry, who held the ball like grim death. After another scrimmage J. Terry got the ball, and was collared by Reid, but he had passed to Hirschberg, who, when collared byjEwen, passed to A. Udy, but he was soon brought to earth; 'The ball being again set rolling, F, Fairbrother came to the front, but he was collared by J, Terry, and the ball was rushed in touch. On being thrown in, Fairbrother got off with it again, and after touching down behind the goal, was called back, the ball being taken off side. Up to this point Greytown had been playing with only thirtoon men, Udy and Tinga coming in was a great relief. The ball had no sooner been set rolling than Udy and Beard came in with Borne grand dribbling. Carterton began to think it was time to put somo life into the game. Ewen, 0; Fairbrother, Reid, and Smith put on a spurt, and; carried the balj
down to the reds' quarter, but A. Udy managed to get it, and returned it from whence it came, Humphries following up in his usual style, got the leather and carried it over the Carterton goal line amidst great applause, but was called back, the ball being taken off side. The ball was soon sent rolling again, when Hirschberg got it, but was pushed ill touch by Moore. On being thrown in, Beard and Udy worked it along into Carterton quarters, when E. Udy, by some good play, took it over the line, After a few ■words the ball was called backhand a scrimmage formed.-; 'As «oon as the -ball* was: out,- Fairbrother was off like a shot., and made the best run of the 1 day, finishing up with a grand I .kick, the ball, landing' close to theGreytown back, (Terry) who got away, and after working his way to the middle of the field was collared. After a bit of sharp play, Carterton was forced down. F. Fairbrother took the kick from the 25 yards and landed it in touch, On being thrown in, Reid tried a run, but Maguire was in his way, and in trying to pass the ball it went out of bounds. Greytown took five yards and scrimmaged it off, Fairbrother, coming in again, tried a run, and on being collared passed to Reid, who 1 in turn pissed to Rutherfurd. The latter made a good run, but lost the ball, which went into touch, When the ball wis thrown in, Rutherfurd got hold of it, and 011 being collared by D. Baillie, they went into touch when half time was called. To start the second spell C, Fairbrother made a splendid kick, but J. Beard was equal to the occasion and returned into touch. Then followed a scrimmage, Ewing aud Fairbrother working well. The reds' goal was placed in jeopardy, but witli some judicious play they managed to work the leather back, when A. Beard made a very nice catch, and claimed a mark, but failed to put it over the ifoal. The ball was soon on the move again, but had not gone far when no side was called, no score being made on either side, The most conspicuous players in the Carterton team were F. and C. Fairbrother, Ewen, Peters and Reed, and for Greytown A. and H. Udy, C. J. and A. Beard, J. Maguire, and J. Terry. Mr T. Wakelin acted as ujnpire for Carterton, and F. W, Jackson, for Greytown, and Mr Seed as referee. The usual cheers. were given at the conclusion of tlio game. Next Saturday the second toams of the above Clubs play.
