THE BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—l was under the impression that there was at Masterton an institution called "The Wairarapa North Benevolent Institution," Laboring under that impression, I reported a case of great distress and destitution to some gentlemen who I thought were members of it. One of these gentlemen promised to give the matter his attention, but after a lapse of three weeks since attention was first called to the case, I am astonished to find that nothing whatever has been done for the poor unfortunate woman and her children, and that, they have actually been without food for two or three days at a time during that period. Sir, if the socalled institution is to be of any service, surely it is time that some of its members bestirred themselves. One good lady; who is now- absent through ill-health, was always active in our midst in doing good, and looking after those in distress. I feel sure that if such a case as the one I name had been brought under her notice, she would never have rested until the necessary relief had been given. I consider it a disgrace to the place that such cases as these do not receive prompt attention. If the present members of the institution are drones, the sooner others willing and ready to do their work aro appointed, the bottor for the community. lam certain some good Samaritans can be found in the place both males and females, who will help in such a cause, if an effort is made to placo the work on a proper footing. : ' I am, &c.
