. WmwGTON, this day. At the Supreme Court sitting yesterday, the jury, in the case of Sinnnonds, a prisoner, charged with assaulting the Governor of the gaol, were unablo to agree, and were locked up all night, This morning they were discharged, and another jury will be empanelled. At to-day's sitting, Williams, alias Allandale,, who pleaded guilty to the recent jewelry robbery, was sentenced to four years, Toupey far false pretences, received three years. He had several previous convictions recorded against him, The first examination under the Military School Board will be taken the first week next month.
A sample of the cartridge-cases to be used in the manufacture of cartridges in Auckland has been received here, They are much superior to the cases used in the imported Snider, and have the advantage that they can be refilled. A treat of the rapid firing Hotchkiss gun will.be made on Saturday afternoon. It is not intended to experiment with the heavy £uns, as it in inadvisable to use the
ammunition at preaefit in stock until shipments on order have arrived.
The new writ for the Bruce seat was issued this morfiing, and made returnable by the 18th Augu st. '• Auckland, this day. The Royal Mail Steamer Rimutaka araived at 8.45 a.m. from Plymouth, via Jlobart. The passengers are all well, there was no deaths, and but one birth (the wife of Dr Menzies. of a daughter). The steamer landed one case of smallpox at • Teneriffe forty days ago, after which she was thoroughly disinfected, There was no other outbreak
