On Good Friday, two curious ancient customs were duly carried out in London, At the church of AllliallowSj Lombardstreet, CO of the youngest boys of Christ's Hospital attended Divine service, at the does of which each received a new penny •' and a bag of raisins. This custom was k., instituted by PeterSymonds, by will dated V 158 G. By the will of William Petts, dated ' 1C92, the minister who officiates was to receive 20s, the clerk 4s, and the sexton 3s Cd, These instructions were carried out to the letter. Another of these ancient ceremonies-one that has been observed for over 500 years—was performed in the churchyard of St Bartholo-mew-the-Great, WestSmithfield. Twentyone new sixpences wore placed on a tombstone, and these were picked up by 21 aged widows.
