THE MISCHIEVOUS SPARROW.
1 ■—♦ _ 1 Miss Orraerod, in her report,on injurious insects, read at the Council mooting of the Royal Agricultural Society the other day, maintained her against the sparrow as a mischi&fpß bird, and repeated her advice in favor of checking its enormous increase. She said—" We do not find from examination of their contents that they feed on com ree maggot, corn fchrips, com aphis,, or any other corn insect; nor have we any. observations of fields infested by these huge flocks - being l freer than other places from insect attack. ' From careful ob&v vations in different places, extending over a period of from one to fifteen years, we do not find any diminution of insects _ round the farm buildings, where thesparrows preatly resort, but we find they have been observed in many cases to drive away true insect feeding birds, The State Entomologcial Returns from the with CrookSjSpent histime giving lectures, and putting the blue ribbon on. • Many peoplo subscribed to him freely, so one •day he told Mr Crooks that he had just received a letter from his wife in America, and she was dangerously ill, and he had to return at once.
