FOOTBALL.
Masterton v Carterton, A football inatqh between the first flffeoenrf of'Maatorton and Carterton was played at the latter place on Saturday afternoon, The ground was rather soft, but otherwise very suitable. The weather favored the visitors, who 5 were accompanied down by a large number of friends. The residents of Carterton also attended in considerable numbora,, The team.was captained, by $. U'Oonnp,!!' an' 4 'Gartertqn' by 'O. fairbrother. The ball was at once taken to the quarters, of the latter, where a number elase' scrimmages occurred, fMaatertQn throughout tried to play an openltmme, but were prevented by their opponents. Carterton was forced down twice before a score was made. Towards the end of the first thirty minutes one of the Carterton backs held the ball while standing quite close to his goal, when the Masterton Captain quickly slipped by him, took the ball out of his hands, and touched down fairly; behind the goal, Polling took the kick, and scored a goal; In the second spell Carterton kicked off, and for two or., three, minutes kept the play near the Masterton goal. It was, however, sppn .worked away, towards the
other end, where it remained'for the 1 remainder of the game. As time pro-''' ceeded it became evident that Masterton""'/ had the bosfc staying powers, for three v. more tries were obtained, namely by ■'/ Whatman and J. Perry (two). One of '•■,; these was converted into, a goal,* so that ; l the match was won by two goals and two . tries to nil. The system of ..counting by " points having been adopted Mastertori scored 14. The players who distinguished : -f themselves most for the winning "team' V were, J., 0;, and W. Perry, What- ■ > man, Hounslow, O'Connor, and Rangi- ■'■' nuij and for, Carterton Smith, Kembfe, Reid and Fairbrother. With ■ more ; practice Carterton will be able, to make a ' good stand iii the game. 1 Player? will, however, also have toendeavor to avoid ■ one or two very bad points. Several of them collared their opponents whenever they thought an advantage would be gained, whether they'were on the ball or not. That is not football. The captain l of the team will no doubt weati them from the habit. At the conclusion of the match the teams gave hearty, cheers for each •■ other. A .■ . —'" •■■■
