A GOOD SUGGESTION.

To the Editor. Sib,—l observe a good and useful bit of work that has just been done by the County at the new Waipoua bridge, viz., the planting of a quantity of willows all through the fascines put down to protect the bank. I would suggest that our Borough Council should, take the hint and at once commence (this being the proper season) and.plant a belt of willows on the town side of the river, .say from the railway bridge down to the back of Mr Dawson s residence, not less than twelve feet wide, and wider where the ground is low, and where there is a great tendency of the river to cut 1 through., In a few years, if satisfactorily carried 'out, it would make such a natural mat or breastwork, that Masterton need never fear the river cutting through (which it assuredly will do sooner or later if nothing is done, just like it went through the east end- of Villa-street at the last great flood). The expense, compared with the security to be derived, would be a mere nothing. Should the Council see its way to undertake so useful a work, one that affects tho welfare of the whole town, and one that, if neglected may at no distant date cause a very heavy expenditure, I will give them as many willows as will plant the whole for tho cutting and carting, I hope that our city fathers will soe their way clear to undertake this very necessary work. I am, &c., . Robert Donald,
