THE POLITICAL HORIZON.
The latest political news is to the •.feet tlmt Sir George Grey and Messrs Mauandrew, Montgomery and Barron are in communication on the subject of forming a party for the pur-' pose ot ousting the Stout-Vogel Government during the ensuing session, and that Mr Sheehan, although . he had the support of the Government party at the Tauranga election, will join them, We are not at all surprised to hear this piece of news, and when reviewing the situation about a fortnight ago,' hinted that there was reason to expect the formation of an opposition out of these materials, It cannot be said that any great attraction will be presented to the House or the country. Everybody knows that the Government would be in a minority if all those members who do not believe iu them were to vote together. Parties are, however, so illdefined that, supposing the Government were defeated, we should only see a repetition of the struggle of last year. We <Jo not profess to havo much faith in the present Government, but think that it is infinitely better than one that could be formed with Sir George Grey and Messrs Montgomery and Macandrew at its head.
The Misterton Borough Council meets to-night, Mr F. H, Wood has made further additions to the list of stock foi bis sale at Hammerich's yards on Thursday. Miss Deakin of the Kalozoic, Masterton, has a new advertisement in another column which should be of special interest to the ladies of the Wairarapa. Mr F. H. Wood will hold his second periodical sale at his new yards to-morrow afternoon, commencing at one o'clock. The catalogue comprises horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry, etc. The Carterton Wosleyan Choir has decided to render the service of song "Eva" atthoTemperancoHall, Masterton, on tho evening of Tuesday the 9th. inst, The service is a descriptive one, and has beeen rendered in Wellington and other parts of the colony with great success.
We recently published a statement giving the number of holdings, dwellinghouses, shops, inhabitants etc., in Masterton, which was, we believe, found very interesting, and quito correct except in our particular. The number of shops was by some mistake put down at 37, whereas the real number is 65, which shows the trade of the town iu a very different light,
Major Cautloy will hand over the charge of the defence works to Major Boddam on the 10th inst,, and will shortly afterwards proceed Home. Colonel Whitmore sailed South on defence business yesterday afternoon, In consequence of the pacific nature of cables from Home in connection with the Russo-Afglian difficulty, the expenditure on the defences will be largely reduced. . Mr W. A. Ellis, medical clairvoyant and psychometrist, who arrived last night, may be consulted at his rooms, at the Temperance Hotel, until Wednesday. During his previous visit to Masterton Mr Ellis made many friends, and his diagnoses proved very extraordinary, and most correct, and he is therefore likely to be fully occupied during his brief stay. We remind the public that a meeting for the purpose of considering the advisableness of forming a Poultry Club in Masterton will be held at the Council Chambers to-morrow evening, There is every reason to believe that the project will be liberally supported. In compliance with public opinion a special section of this kind was formed in connection with the last show of the Horticultural Society and proved a great success. The encouraging result has led to the present step in advance being taken. The Government have decided to grant a free passage by steamer to the delegate of the Napier Chamber of Commerce, who is proceeding to Samoa to report on the requirements as to opening a trade with Samoa and other neighboring islands, SirJuliiiß Vogel is also communicating with the Chambers at Christchurch and Wellington, offering similar concessions in each case. The offers aro conditional that the reports of delegates are not to bo considered of a confidential nature, and must be published on their return.
The Phoenix Lodge I. 0.G.T., met las night, when three new members were initiated. The Committee reported that the Service of song entitled "Eva" would be rendered by tho Cartorton Choir on Tuesday June 9th. Tho Committe was instructed to receive the Choir on their arrival, and provide refreshments before their return. Tho routine business having been disposed of, the Lodge went inte harmony, and a very pleasant evening was spent. A remarkable scene was witnessed in Constantinople recently. An immense crowd of infuriated women surrounded the Ministry of Finance, and despite the efforts of the guards to resist their entry, forced their way into the building. An advance party burst yelling and gesticulating into the office of the Minister, and, to his great alarm, demanded, with many threats, the arrears of their husbands' pay. In the meanwhile the crowd of infuriated women poured into the building, and the situation of the Minister became every moment more critical, A large body of police were summoned, and soon afterwards made an attempt to clear the premises; but then' efforts were unavailing, and they were at last forced to retire, leaving the Amazons in possession of the field. The Minister managed, amid the confusion, to make his escape by a back wjndow, after having made plausible promises to the enraged women, The White Star Royal Mail steamcar Gennanic, which sailed for New York from Qugengtown at 2 p.m. on the 3rd of April, having on board a heavy American mail, and 150 saloon, and about 700 steerage passengers, returned to Queenftown. The Germanic experienced a fcerribje storm during April 4th, lasting about ten hours, during which the ship was struck by tremendous seas, which carried away several of her boats, the skylights, and tho steer-ing-house, besides doing other Berious damage to the decks. The most dangerous feature was the bursting of the sea into the reading-room, wbieli is situated over the grand saloon, forming a dome. Through the forward portion of this, immense volumes of water poured into the saloon and state-rooms. Great commotion prevailedamong the passengers during the gale, but in the very trying circumstances under which the ship was placed, the commander, Captain Kennedy, and his officers behaved with the greatest coolness, and exhibited sound judgment. One seaman was lost overboard, and several were injured. The passengers,' with one or two exceptions, escaped unhurt The Germanic subsequently returned to Liperpool to repair damage.

The next outward English mail by direct steamer will close at Masterton on Saturday next, at 6.30 p.m. Captain Edwin telegraphs at noon today :—Bad weather ten hours from now between North Eastand North and West; glass further fall. Indications of rain after 11 hours. Wo understand that Mr Charles Pharazyn, uf Longwood, Featherston, was married in April last to Miss Kempthorne, daughter of Dr Kempthorne, of Cornwall. We have received a copy of Mr W. K. Bishop's penny Timetable for the current mouth. The publication has been carefully revised, and contains a surprising: amount of informatidn for the price. We are glad to notice that the Borough Council is having the mud scraped off Queen Street. Since the recent rains tins thoroughfare had an unpleasantly thick covering of slush, sothat it was almost impossible to cross dry-footed without watertight boots. ,

The Governmenthavereceived acommunication from the Cable Company asking them jointly with New South Wales to continue the subsidy to the cable between Australia and New Zealand for a further period of ten years. The New Zealand Government have expressed a strong inclination to discontinue the subsidy, and as the line is now finished, those using it should be made to pay. They are, however, in communication with the New South Wales Government on the question, The Victorian Government have asked the Government of New Zealand to red uce the charge on cables along the New Zealand land lines, but the Commissioner of Telegraphs has declined to accede to this request. The Maories assembled in great numbers at the Court-house this morning to hear a charge of larceny of awatch, which was preferred by George Wall against one of their number, namedßota Tuki. From the evidence it appeared that the complainant, who had been about Masterton for some time, had missed the watch, and given information to the polico, together with the number and description of tho article, winch was shortly afterwards found in the possession of tho accused, who was thereupon arrested and remanded till to-day. Mr C. P. Skipper, who appeared for the defence, admitted this evidenco so far as it went, butdenied that Tuki had stolen the watch. He produced two witnesses, Karaitiana, and Putai Mikaera, who swore that complainant had offered tho watch for sale, and that after somo bargaining acoused had bought it for five shillings. As the complainant was not.by any means clear as to what he had done on the day he missed the watch, Mr Stratford, R. M,, who presided, dismissed the case,
