ANNUAL LICENSING MEETING.
Borough of Masterton. Tlio annual meeting of the Licensing Committee of the Borough of Masterton was held at noon to-day. Present,— Messrs Chamberlain (Chairman) Harding, 8011, Girdwood, and Kingdon. The police presented a report on all the houses in the town, which was read by Mr Freeth, Clerk to the Committee. All the houses, including the new one erected by Mr H. Sullivan, were favorably reported upon. NEW LICENSE. Mr H. Sullivan applied for a new license for a house to bo called the Wairarapa Hotel, and situated in Queen-st. The application was supported by the necessary number of ratepayers, and no objection hat} been lodgecj, Mr Beard appeared for tlje applicant and said lie thqugljt that the report of the Inspector, together with the pfyqs, were exceptionally goqd. ft was for the committee tp consider whether the town was large enough to have another house. The population pf Mastertpn was, roughly speaking, 3,500 without considering residents immediately outside thebprpugh, At Wanganiii they had about 5,000 inhabitants, and 32 licensed houses, and at Greymouth eyen more in proportion. It was only quite recently that i WW fiame up by the late train with his wife and two children, andfailed to find accommodation, nor did lie find it for an hour. He pointed outthatthe ratepayers were, byan overwhelming majority, in favor of a new license being granted. Mr Girdwood said that he did not consider a new license was required until they l)i}4 % population of about 5000 or 6000. ' Mr Kingdon seconded the proposition, He thought there were more drinkshops than necessary already. He thought the applicant should have opened his house fpp accommodation before this. Mr rj.av(jiiig nioved that the license be granted. ThoOhairmanseconded flie amendment, and thought tljat after the address of Mr Beard, and the vote of the ratepayers, he could only vote in favor of the new license. The amendment was.lost by three votes to two, and the original motion against granting the license was carried. E, Toohill (Railway Hotel), were granted, QLERK'S salary, A letter was received from the Town Olerk, intimating that tho Borough Council could not in future pay the salary of the clerk to the committee. In reply to the Committee, Mr Freeth stated that he was appointed by the Government, Mr Kingdon said that they could all claim travelling expenses, Mr Girdwood moved that the Committee* in future gharge LI Is each for travelling expensed Secqqtjed by Mr Hardin? and carried. The members of tho Committee then agreed to pay the clerk's salary out of their travelling expenses. The meeting of this Committee was held at 0,30 p,m, Present—Messrs Dagg (chairman), Chamberlain, Gunderson, Everett, and Hessey. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. NEW LICENSE. The police reported that a house erected by Mr Blinkhorne, about four miles from the Mulgrave Hotel, and to bo called tho Railway Hotel, was not a neceMfjty, and that they had been unable to make anyrepprj; Jfpop the accommodation, Petitions for and against the granting of the license were received, the latter having been sent in a day too late. Mr Beard appeared to oppose the issue of a new license, on the ground that it was not required, and only meant as a resort for navvies. It was moved by Mr Everett and seconded by Mr Gunderson, That the license be not granted. The applicant stated that he had been induced to make the application by settlers at Eketahuna, as it was half way between that place and Masterton, and also quite pear the Mauriceville railway station. The resolution was earned. WPWAL, The application of Mr R, H. Elliotts "for a renewal of the licenso for the Mulgrave Hotel was granted, Accounts amounting to £2 10s were passed for payment.
