TfIEPAPJHAKA NATIVES,

(united press association.) New Plymouth, May 14.

The state of affairs at Parihaka still continues unsatisfactory. Mr Purnell, on behalf of Government, offered the Natives the rent due to them from leases to Europeans. The Natives absolutely refused to take the rents, saying if they did not get more money than the amount offered, they would take their land back from the Europeans, The Natives show determined settlers, trying to annoy them in every possible way. When Native cattle trespass on cultivated lands of the Europeans, the Natives, instead of taking the catfclo out through the slip-bars, deliberately demolish the fences or cut down the ditch or bank, as the case may be, and take their cattle away. This causes heavy losb to the settlers, who see no way of obtaining! redress. Mr Ballance is expected to arrive at Opunake to-night, when several deputations are to wait upon him,
