It js gpnounced that General Sir Peter Lumsdfw l)"S resigned, owing to his discontent with the aation of England on the Afghan frontier question, It has ti'uiiHpirod that King Christian of Denmark has been invited by Russia to arbitrate between England and that country with legard to the Penj Deli incident, and that he has signified his willingness to accpt the office, provided that the invitation emanates frsm.the British Government also. The Daily News , to-day states that the Russian Government have assured
England that they have no designs on Herat, now or in the future. Melbourne May 7.
■The Government to-day received a telegram from the Agent-General, Mr Murray Tmitli, in which lie.status that it is still doubtful whether peace will be maintained between England and Eussja.

The British Government has purchased from Italy: the ironclad ship Dandalo, 10,570' tons, carrying four 100-ton guns.
The Dandalo is a sister ship to the Duilio, aiid the two are the largest ironclads afloat. Several English men-of-'var, which were recently ordered to Vladivostock have arrived there, and are at present stationed off that port.
