The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, MAY 1, 1885. THE TOWN LANDS TRUST ELECTION.
The electors yestepjay expressed ;i very decided opinion when liiey reB turned Messrs Gapper as members of the Town Luiiilh Trust, and declined the services of Messrs Hogg, Reuse, and GjrdWOOD, In effect they said that they approved of the manner in which the 5 affairs of the Trust had been administered, and that tlmy had no desire to effect a change, It lias been said that there were no party lines in the contest, except such as had been created by us. If that were so, wo should take the result of the election as a great compliment. We, however, adhere to the opinion that the lines were very clearly defined. The opposition first and foremost threatened to ruin the Park, and said that tlin money expended on it had been simply squandered. The two old Trustees and Mr Parsons thought the Park was something that tho inhabitants might well be proud of, and that it shook' not only be maintained, but further improved. Mr Girdwood was silent upon the subject, but as he did not stand on a separate ticket, the voters were justified in assumiig that ho went with Messrs Hogg and Reese. Tim old Trustees had carried out the wishes of the! volers by selling a piece of land at Greytown, but they were Warned for doing this by the opposition, who charged them with having caused a serious loss to the Trust, It is scarcely possible to see how a much wider difference of'opiuion could have existed. Had Messrs Hogg, Pißese, and GißDwooobeen elected, the voters would in effect have blamed the whole of the Trustees for having carried out their wishes on the last point, while, as regards the former, they would have expressed an opinion that th?y did not care about the maintenance of the Park. It was our duty to point this out, and it is satisfactory to know that a substantial majority has declined to lay itself open to a charge of inconsistency. The Trustees are now enabled to proceed with the plan they have followed for a number of years, without any material opposition, and we think the electors are to be congratulated upon the fact. Before leaving the subject we must correct a statement which was made at the declaration of the poll, Mr Hcgg attributed the respective positions, of Messrs Parsons and Girdwood to the fact that ' the former was a brewer And the latter :
a totsl abstainer, It will however, be seen on referring to the list of clndi' dates that Mr Parsons was allied with two abstainers. The question was nol One of temperance, because there were two temperance men on the winning sidej and one on the other, Let us hope that such foreign elements will nevei again be intioduced m the Park Trust elections.
