CORRESPONDENCE.
PATRIOTISM AND ADVERTISING.
To the Editor.
Sm,-Mr Thoa. Parsons' letter in yesterday's issue, will, I hope, have the effect of opening the eyes of the members of the Special Settlement Association to the apparent motives for the virtuous indignation displayed by your contemporary at the Association not" inviting competition for their survey work." This means, when read the right way up, "not throwing away about twenty pounds in useless advertising in the Star." Things have come to a pretty pass in a small place like this, when tradesmen, managers of public bodies, etc., who don't submit to the views of the proprietors of a newspapei, should be liable to abuse and misrepresentation. But their remedy is very simple,-and in their own hands, i.e. by being firm and nut advertising in any newspaper that prostitutes its functions in such a contemptible manner, and let ■those ffho bark through it do their worst, there's nothing to be afraid of; when they do show their teeth they can only snarl—not bite.. .
