Non-official estimate of the cost of all subsequent wars and precautionary expenditure on account of wars down to the end of 1880 ...37,120,000 Grand total (in round thousands) .. .127,564,241 : This, of course, exclusive of the ordinary naval and military peace establishment, which amounts to- more than £26,000,000 per annum, nor does it include any portion of the cost of the army in India, or of tho Afghan wars, the latter of which cost £20,000,000 sterling, of which England paid £5,000,000.
