MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary iortmghtly meeting of the Borough Council was held yeßterday evening. Present:—Hia Worship the Mayor, Cm Bacon, Muir; Heron, Gapper, Perry, Williams, and Hessey.' The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

CORRESPONDENCE. An application was received from T. Wagg to nave her name inserted on the Burgess roll, in place of that of. Thoniaß Wagg. Granted, A similar application from J. H. Langley applied for permission to break up the foot-p|th in front of Sullivan's building, Queen. Rawson wrote stating the terms upon which he was.willing to prepare the levels of Worksop Road, and Renall and Villa Streets. ■:' reports. \ The Poundkeeper; presented a report for the past montfe" : The Inspector of Nuisances reported that he had caused the nuisance "existing at the North end of Dixon St. to be abated, and suggesting that a notice board be placed on the spot, warning-people against depositing rubbish there. Cr Gapper moved that a notice board be put up, but at the same time he would ask whether it was net customary for corporations to provide a place where rubbish might be deposited, The Mayor said that the reason for having the place closed was because offensive matter was shot there, They certainly wanted a rubbish depot. Cr Heron seconded, The motion was agreed to. It was resolved that: the Inspector of Nuisances be instructed to look out for a suitable site for depositing rubbish, The Town Clerk reported that in the absence of a quorum the meetjng.of the Works and Finance Committees on the previous evening had lapsed, and that the following accounts had been certified : Cheques and contingencies, £25: Timber, from Bacon, 1b 6d; Timber from R. Donald, £22 I9s 9d: goods from M. Caselbergand Co., 13s 4d.- election of Licensing Committee, and gas loan, £1 lis; Timber, from Toomath, £1 Is 2d, The accounts were passed' ror payment, An overdraft was reported of £67713s 6d. An item of £5, salary to the clerk of the Licensing Committee, was held over till next meeting, the Clerk being instructed to look up authority as to whether the amount can be legally paid. The Council then went into committee. the ute M. Dixon's estate.

A petition was received from landholders in the estate of tho late Michael Dixon, praying for the formation of a ritjht of way throught the acre, and offering to give the land required. The position of the matter has beon explained in. reports of previous meeting of the Council. A letter was received from Messrs Beard and Gray in support of the petition. Mr A. R. Bunny, representing the Trustees, also wrote on the subject, asking permission to register certain titles. It was resolved on the motion of Or May ;; That the Council does not see that it has any power: fo qanqtion any right of way or private street unless it be of the minimum width of 40, feet and that any such street must first be made to the satisfaction of the Council, and that proper plans must be submitted," OVERSEER SREPOET. The nverseer reported that he had replanked No. 3 culvert in High street and recommended that tho side drains in Short street! arid Villa street be cleaned out; that the gorse growing on the north east side of Lincoln road be 'grubbed up, and that notice bo given to the Railway Department to clear the gorse off the west side of the same road where it abuts on the railway line. Sergt. the Council to'devise means for regulating the mate. The Town Clerk was instructed, on the motion of Cr Capper, seconded by Cr Williams, to write to other Boroughs and ascertain what course they pursue under similar circumstances, and also to draw the attention of the Salvation Army to the fact that complaints had been made, and ask them to discontinue marching in the manner complained of, IIIEGAL STREETS. It having cropped up while in Committee that there were several illegal streets x in the Borough, it was .moved 'by Cr ' Heron, seconded ,byCr Williams, and carried, that the Town Olerk'be instructed to take proceedings against owners of land laid off as streets, .contrary to the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act.
