VULTURE HOCKS IN BRAHMAS.
The question of" Are vulture hooks in Brahman a disqualification?" lias been raised in the Wellington »nd Wajrarapa poultry shows, As Mr L, Wright is. the standard authority for New Zealand judging, Mr Payton of this office recently ■wrote to him on the subject, and has just received the following reply : La Belle Savage Yard, Ludgate Hill, London, E.G., Jan. 15,1885.
Dear Sir-Your case has probably been already rcfeiw} to in tho columns of tho Live Stock Journal, Since 1880 the judging in England has altered very materially, and at the presont' moment, the fault you refer to—vulture hocks—can hardly be said to be discouraged at all, As my scales are based avowedly upon actual practice, the change is of course duly noted, and acted upon, in 'the current (cheap) edition now nearly finished, At the same-time nearly all individually condemn the craze, an,oj there are some slight signs of a probable re.-actfon, If your birds were those chosen by Mr Tegetmeier, I doubt whether they are hocked as we consider, Lastly, however, Imusfc point out that there is nothing even in my 1880 edition to justify "the best birds being passed over," Nothing whatever. Vulture hocks are simply penalised by 20 points, which is not enough to prevent allocked bird of really marked superiority from winning. It amounted to very serious discouragement and no more, My opinion remains as it was, I think hocks contrary to every canon of both taste and ability. But my. scales do not profess tobo my own opinions, but other people's practice in judging, and are revised to this from time to time. The Poultry Club Standard, whenever, it-comes out, may keep things morefixed. '",'"'• Yours truly, •_ L. Wright.
