WAR IN THE SOUDAN.

Cairo, February 22. Latest telegrams to hand from Korti report that the enemy is ■ harassing the British troops at Abukela, to which place Sir Redvers Buller recently retired from Gubat, and it is stated that he will fall back on Gakdul as soon as the necessary camels arrive at Abukela,
Port Chalmers, February 22. • The- Port 'Chalmers Naval Artillery have offered |p proceed-to the Soudan," The men are principally seamen, and if their offer is accepted they would be found very useful. : ' Christchurch, Februasy 22. "" There is great enthusiasm among the
volunteers here Jn regard to proceeding to the Soudan. Several officers and men have expressed their readiness to join the New Zealand oontigent if formed. It is that 200 partly drilled ■ meu ; 6oiild be enrolled, r7Mr Howard Barter, who has seon actiW service,-has made an offer to the Hop., the Colonial Secretary to raise and equip, at his own oxponso, fifty men to proceed to the Soudan No reply has yet been received by-Mr Barter.
