In first day'a racing of the unnl autumn meetiM etid* the wwpkw of the Wiiiuft Jodm Club, ni bU yesterday in splendid w—tbir on t)M Tauherunikaa oovae. Aa can easily ba imagined, with the late dty wrthw, Um nqr bMni,nl mimwmm cm or two wntdbimi took place. 1m attaodanoa wm veiy lair numbering between six and seven hundred, which, no doubt, would haft* been Ismblj inwuri from tht North Wtinnp* Sad the train arrangementa between MmMoi aad Featherston been made more public. The Railway Department ahawad gnat want of foresight tn thia matter, being oontented j in sticking up a law small jpaeteia with j place* where they were unlikely to ha j imd. The number at vehiclea «n larger than we have seen on anjr previous ooea•Ion. The iair aex was largely reprseented, the stand preoonting quite a gay appearance. The usual number of gamao ware there donga roaring trade, and the attractions included a swing boat, a oow with aem horns, and the amalleat pony in the mM. Ijkt only nvrit « ™ oourse was a hurdy-gurdy aadab% dia». A number «{ pottee were waaant, but they had simply notUw to ao, the crowd being the most we km eror sera on a , course not .a aolitary drunk beinjr aeen. Meaan Brunskill and Hayward supplied the thirsty souls to their hearts content. Mr A. L. Whyte, of Carterton, had charge of the grand stand refreshment booth, and supplied the wants of the inner man in his usual first-class style, while Mr A. McGlaahan, of Masterton, had the outside booth and catered to the satisfaction of all who patronised him. Fruits were supplied by Mr J. F. Ward, of Masterton, and the whole of the privilege holders had reason to be satisfied with their bargains. Mr A. R. McFarlane had his totalisator on the ground ami put through something over £l7ooduring the day. The raciiig on the whole was very good, there being some fine finishes, notably those between the Slave and Administrator in the Tauhere-
nik&u Stakes and Revoke and Rumor in (Jie Champagne Stake*. In the latter had not Mr Vallanoe's filly been suffering from a severs attack of iniluensa, ahe would have reversed the order of tiling*. With the exception nf the District Handicap the favourite won in every race and consequently no big dividends were paid, the largest being that of £4 7a on Gabble in the District. The greatest amount on one race was on the Champagne Stakes, the total being £448, no lea* than £3OO of this amount being on the winner. In the District Handicap Mr Tancred declared to win with First Water aad she was at oncea tremendous favorite, no less than 223 out of a total of 394 being on her. Gabble was alio well 81 pinning her faith to her. All the races were started with the most commendable punctuallity, with the result that all were able to return home in good time. We must congratulate Mr Drummond on his starting, aa to almost every case he got his fields away well together, and it was simply the fault of the jocks' if they did not get off on equal terms. Mr W. Lowes occupied the judge's box, bat his duties were not particularly arduous, there being no dead neat* to decide. Mr D. Donald officiated at the scales, Mr W. O. Williams doing duty with the watch. Mr 8. R. Armstrong, the courteous and obliging Secretary, was to be found in hi* usual place, and the whole of the officers worked hard to make the meeting a success, in which they oertainly succeeded. The following are the events in the order in which they were run:—
