PAHIATUA.
; (PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) ! A meeting, was held on the evening of the 9th inst., for the purpose of considering the best means of celebrating the .opening of the school, and also to take steps to clear- the land around the school of timber, ■ &c. There was a very good attendance, and Mr W, W, McOardle was voted to the chair. The following resolutions were . passed:—That the opening of the school be celebrated by a tea meeting in the afternoon and a concert in the evening; - that Messrs Olsen, Doran, Crimp, McMillon, Naylor, Igoe, Baucke, Hughes, Miller, and \V, Corbett (with'power to add to their number), bo appointed to act in conjunction with tho School Committee ; that Mesdames Dawßon, Crewe, McOardle, Corbett, Farrell, Avery, Hall, ' Davie, Hughes, Olsen,' and Igoo, be asked to assist the above committee; that 1 a working bee be formed for tho purpose 1 of clearing the land- of timber, &c. ; ! that the inhabitants be asked to give at L least one day's work or equal to it in ' money, and Saturday the 21st was appoin- ! ted as the day for the wprk. A Commit--1 tee was appointed to canvass the district. Mr H. Sedcole's ojfer tp provide refreshments fpr the workers was accepted. 1 It was decided that the committee meet i that night week, It is expected the school will be opened, early in March, * Fires are beginning to rage very r fiercely up here. Messrs Davie, Whit- > combe, W. Corbett and others have had a very good bum to-day, and the whole of 1 the district has been covered with smoke, ' a large quantity of it coming from Pal- ' morston. Many others are expected to ! start this week, and a lively timo is an- " ticipated as everything is very dry, '•■■■ ■ Mr McOardle is erecting a butcher's 1 shop at Pahiatua. There should now be ' an opening in that thriving district for a 1 business of the kind.
