Our local;contemporary suggested Mr Izard as a suitable person for the Resident i Magistracy of tho Wairayapa, and the ( Standard gravely questions the fitness of | this gentleman for the appointment. r The i absurdity of the whole thing is apparent ] when it is remembered that a Resident ] Magistrate in this district gets a modest j £4OO a year and that a lawyer in Mr { Izard's position is worth two or three thousand pounds per annum,: Wliyidon't our contemporaries propose Sir James 1 Prendergait for the vacancy? t

A meeting of the Masterton Benevolent Society was held in the Institute yesterday. Present—Mr E. Feist (Chairman), Revs.W. E, Paige andD. Fulton, and . Mesdames Gapper, Hacker, Fulton, Paige, ' and Misses Caverhill and Beard, The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £lO 19s 4d, and that at the end of the current month a subsidy would be paid by the Government for subscriptiflnij amounting to about £SO some of which were ajyoady collected. With regard tp the .case pf Ijfan.gen, £lO had been received from the Tauerju, His passage had been paid to Sydney, a'ntjthe balance paid to Hansen who had left for Wellington en route for Sydney, An order had been given in the ease of Mrs Weaver, and an intimation had been received that Mr Weaver was in Melbourne and that steps would betaken next Monday before Mr Wardell to compel him to support his family. Mr Paige said he was of opinion that an arrangement had been made last session by which the Governmentcould tako action in a case .of this kind where the deserter had gone to another colony. The Secretary, stated pressure would be brought to bear through 'i&e ppljeo to compel the absconder to assistjiitheajrpppjtofhiswife. Further action was left over jijtjl JJio decision of Mr Wardell had been giyejir "iQ|j jthe motion of the Rev, W, E, Paige tin) Secretary was instructed to write to L> specter Shearman of the Police Department, Wellington, asking him to communicate with the policeof Melbourne with a view to induce Weaver to contribute to ; the support of his family here. The Secretary reported that relief had been given in one case to a family to enable them to tide over their difficulties through a spell of sickness. The action #f the "Secretary was endorsed. One pther case reported in which temporary assistance hacj been but it was not recommended to jit as tho head of the family was an able-bodied! man, and work was available for him if he; would undertake it. Reference was made to a case of great hardship, in which a man named Sennex, who had been out of work for some months during the past winter was arrested on a warrant charging )ljm with failing to comply with an order ( of -the Cpprt to pay the sum of 7s fid per week tpwards tljfl support of his mother and V which ,oJonce he }v s taken away from a jpb he -had jifafc oJ}tain,(s ajd lodged in the Wellington gap],'' jßy ,this ; means his wUo and family pf seven small '■ children were thrown pn the Spcie.ty f° r relief, which had been &\m\ Mom, The Secretary stated the man wpuld be. discharged in a few days and had wprff to go to so that relief would not need to be continued, In answer to tho Rev. Mr Fulton the Secretary said it waa not a usual thing to supplement subscriptions paid in for special objects although it had been done in two cases recently in which they had special recommendations to warrant it. Accounts amounting to £9 12s 6d were passed for payment. It was resolved at once to open up a list for annual subscriptions and start a canvas of the town and surrounding districts, on the motion of the Hey, Mr Paige, seconded by Mr E, Feist, The Chairman said he quite believed the plan would be preferable to the present spasmodic sys? temof subscribing to special cases,. The Government would subsidise the amount subscribed, and the Committee would be able to deal with each case on its merits. Mr Paige said these cases had never been got up by the Society although they had been credited with it, and it was also a mistake to say that no subscriptions had. been • paid in, as many a sum of 5s and under had been received. The Secretary drew the attention of the. Committee to the fact that a vacancy existed in their number through the retirement of the exMayor. The present Mayor being already on the Committee, it was decided to leave the vacancy to be filled at the annual election.
