The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1885. FRUIT CULTURE.
Masterton is a large consumer of fruit and it is vory unsatisfactory to notice at thia season of the year that the bulk of the supplies are not Wairarapa grown articles but importations from Tasmania the middle Island, and other localities whence fruits are shipped to Wellington. We possess a climate which ripena a con•sidorablo variety of fruit and a soil which is all that can be doaired but we aro apparently unable to supply & tithe of the stock required for ourowtr use."" This is specially to be ..regretted because while well ripened and fresh fruit is wholesome as well as palatable, tlie imported fruits being gathered before tliey mature are comparatively stale and unwholesome, L, pays to grow fruit even.in the worst soasons. Both last year and this the weather lias been exceptionally cold and unfavorable for pomologißts and yot under those adverse conditions those who have grown for the market roporji that they have mado' a' fair profit out of their labors.' , One gardener assured us that lie. had.;sold, £4O worth of small fruits this season. Such a return for a man who does not employ labor, and who possesses a littlo patch of -freehold, is remunerative, and the work of cultivation is perhaps on the whole as healthy and pleasing an occupation-aa any that can be found. It is certainly one that can be followed with profit by the numerous holders of small suburban sections in the neighborhood of a town liko Masterton, The Masterton Town Lands Trustees meet this evening. . Mr J. A. Marchant, Commissioner of Crown Lands, is, we regret to learn, confinod to his house through illness.
