FIRE BRIGADE COMPETITION.
Dunedin, January 28. It was fine weather for tho Firo Brigade competition, 140 men, representing. 23 brigades in all parts of the colony,., were present. Only one event off between 11 a.m. and 7p.m., as'the watermain leading into the Caledonian grounds burst twice and stopped the hose practice. Tho event concluded with the engine practice. The teams were lying down on a tent half dressed when the word was given, and tho men had to get up, dress, run 25yds, connect and play out from one side of tho engine 50ft of hose, fix branch, and pump water from a dam over a rope 10ft high. The'result was as follows:Timaru, lmin 30£ sees; Wanganui, lmin 20|seca; Lyttloton, lmin 1| sec; Christchurch lmin lb' sees; Invercargill, lmin 55 sees; Ashburton, lmin 2Jsecs; Kumera lmin 15|sec Grahanißtown, lmin 19| sees; South Dunedin, lmin, 29}secs;' Nelson, lmin 34secs; Napier lmin Ifsees ; Spit, lmin 7aaca; Dunedin, lmin Husoes; Rongiora, luiin-25f sees; Auokland lmin Usees; Masterton, lmin llisecs." The following thereforejs the result:—Napier 1 j Spit, 2; Auokland 3. A protest has been entered by the Dunedin men against, the Auckland team on the ground that 'they made up their hose wrongly. The Invercargill team ■■■ was disqualified because they neglected, to lock their forecarriage in tho hose practice. The reels were on a chalk line 100 yards from tho the fire plugs, and tluy men were stationed ton yards beliind, At the sound of the pistol they had to run with the reel, fix-hydrant and run out 50ft of canvas hose from each delivery of union; fixthebranchandthrowwaterovertherope. Tlie following teams, got through the ovont:—Dunedin,,.! inin s|secs; -Napier, lmin llsec3; Grahamstown, lmin lOaecs; .Now.Plymouth,,'lmin 22} sees; Lyttloton, lmin, 23Jsecs; Spit,,lmin 24}secs; Timaru, lmin 26secs;' Masterton lmin 28secs. Nolsoh and Chiiatchurch were disqualified through somo hitch. It is expected the. wholo thing will: bo gono over again. There was a strong wind throughout, with nn occassional shower,, - The attendance of the publro waa large, a half-holi-day being kept in the.city. We learn from Mr Muirlthat the result of the Engine Competition was: Napier Ist, Spit 2nd, Masterton 3rd. Thoro were nineteen entries.
