UPPER TAUERU ROAD BOARD.
.-.The- monthly meeting of the above Board was held at Bowlands on Monday, January-sth, at noon. Present—Messrs R. S. Hawkins (Chairman), J. Wingate, E. C.-Hood, B. P. Perry, and J. Rutherfurd, COBBESPONPENCE, From County Council, requesting the Board to furnish them with the Upper Taueru ratebook.'/.. From the Masterton Road Board Engineer, enclosing- tracing of 1,256 acres, 1 being part of thp Upper Taueru Road District-onthe Wangaehu. ••■•■•■ : • It was resolved that tho Ohairman supply the County with rate book. The Chairman informed the Board .of his having received an application from some of the Wangaehu settlera torefund .the rates of certain parts of Mr McKenzie's property abutting on the Wangaehu road. He thought it only fair to accede to their request as it Was through error'this 1256 acres had been added to - their district. After some discussion it'i'-was resolved that'the Chairman see Mr Bremner and suggest a modification of the acreage subject thereto, and arrange' the matter with the Masterton Board, Messrs Perry and,Mackay Brps. waited on the Board.re,road l(ne tg their properties, and it was resolved that the Chairman and Mr Perry employ a competent surveyor to lay off a road : from the mam road across the river, at such point as is most convenient to both, parties. The Messrs Mackay applied; to the Board for assistance to open up ';lieir road, Stating they could not get a dray up to' their woolshed at present. The Ohairman replied that the Board had no funds in hand, and If they had he thought they could not, grant any to be expended on private roads, ■■'•'---' ; ; Mr Wingate agreed with the' Chairman and explained that Me'ssrs.Perry and Mack'ay's rates for this" year"\wpuld be swallowed up in survey of road. ■■'Mr Mackay.eaid he had been informed by the County Clerk that tho road now. used by iihom was surveyed, and therefore the. Chairman's excuse for not grantingtheir request, must,fall, through. He thought" tne Chairman had taken no .pains to ascertain whether the road had been laid .off or not. ' He did not think any of the members knew anything about thematter. The Chairman had said it was their (Mackay and Perry's) place to find out the truth of .the matter.. But .what was the good of their doing so if they were not. believed when they informed the Board that the line had been laid off?. The Chairman - retortetl. that -he had made every effort bqtj'i'n Wellington ant} Masterton to find out if such a road existed, but could get no information on the matter.
After, a warm and desultory conversation, 'Mr Mackay was understood to say that he did not see what good the Board was as they seemed only to deal wii;l] main roads..
The Board adjourned to tho -firs Monday in February at 11 a.m.
