. ..Melbourne, December3o.The Christmas festivities passed with ;the usual rejoicings, the weather being beautifully fine. The pantomines were in full swing and tho theatres were all crowded.
There was a narrow esoape from a sarious disaster on Boxing Day. The steamer Black Eagle, with 130 souls on board, sprunk a leak, and only got to St Kilda pier shortly before the water extinguished the fires. The vessel sank within an hour afterwards.
The number of passengers by railway on Christmas Day and Boxing Day was very large, fully 130,000 persons leaving the various stations in the city during those two days, the intercolonial cricket match attracting a good deal of attention, The wicket was very fine and the scores large. The action of the Australian Eleven in declining to play against Shaw's team was genarally condemned, Mr R. S. Smylhe, the well-known theatrical agent, returned here from a visit to Europe per Messageries Company's 8, s, Yarra. Among the passengers was Monsignor Luck', Boman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, A large shark was caught in the harbour containing portions of the remains of the two men who were drowned while out sailing. The question of the protest against German annexation Of New Guinea is largely occupying the attention of the colonies. New South Wales and South Australia have asked for fuller information regarding the proposed joint protest, while Queensland and Tasmania give unqualified agreement. The tone of the Press throughout the colonies is unanimously indignant at the action of the Colonial Office,
