The regular monthly meeting of the above took place at the Institute last night. Present—Messrs Boddington, (ciiairnian),.Lowes,Galloway, Johnston, Hosg, and. Mr Woodroofe explained the corporation by-laws oh- : the matter, He thought.' .that tlipy had • beeri rather elaborate in.their improvements, .but if the school property was exempt they were not liable for tbe amount.
Cr Johnston hardly thought it was hardly wqr,th discussion as to liability or not, butkwhether, as a public body, they should Subscribe their quota to the. improves , made at their own request, T|e.'char|(e';made at present was in accordance with the regulations of the' Council.

Mr Caselberg's prize of a sewing machine was reported to have .been
awarded to Minnie D'Arcy,
The Chairman said the award.had been made by the children themselves by ballot. There were 66 children in the room who voted, • and Minnie
D'Arcy had 33 votes out. of thai number, and the next 11, and several
smaller,, and the Committee considered toe ballot proved very satisfactory. The. Fourth, Fifth.andSixth-Standard girls were the ones who lind ballqtted, ■' ., Accounts amounting to £33 18s 7d were passed for payments ;
An Bccount from J. Smith, hold over from last meeting for clearing and digging round trees was disputed, The charge was considered excessive, and the work had been since valued at 17s 7d.—Referred to Mr Peyton with power to settle. Mr Galloway was appointed visiting member for the'ensuing month, and the meeting adjourned.

THB POUND.. The new Impounding Act was contidered and the following resolutions passed V— ■>■ ■ .■ -- .1. That- the hew -"lmpounding' Act whioh owes into operation on January Ist, will tend to reduce the income from the pound which is now barely sufficient to meet expenses, and the Council be therefore recommendtid to continue the present management for three months and to make a comparison of the income received with the same period under the old Act, 2. That the poundkeeper end the | ranger be re-appointed under the new Act, during the pleasure of the Council and a copy of the Act supplied to each of them. 3. That the Committee be authorized to have the pound board re-painted with the new schedule of charges as required by the Act, .--.■- . 4. That the Committee be authorised .to fence in ; the piece of land adjoining the pound for use as a paddock for cattle taken after sunset, and that h. charge of la per head be made for paddocking.. 5, That the Town Clerk be authorised to have a pound book.made in accordance with the prescribe form. •' • 6. That steps' be taken to obtain an alteration of Section 51 otYthe new Act so that any penalties received for cattle wandering at large in the public streets under Section 17 maybe paid into the district fund- instead of tbe Consolidated Fund, 7; That pound sales be held every Saturday when required. George stated,-in reply to questions, 1 that the Company Wanted permission 1 to occupy the streets, and in return they would undertake to have the gas works 1 in going order in 12 or 15 months; i would reinstate the streets and keep I them in order wherever opened; would advertise the Company in Mastefton and make the first allotments to persons : •applying from there. They would supply "gas to the Council for street, •lampg'.at ten per cent less than to private 'consumers As soon as matters ,were settled with the Council they, would invited; offers of sites not too far from the centre, They would not agree to the insertion of a purchasing clause at all. Mr George then retired. It was resolved—l. That the condition as to right-of purchase be abandoned. 2.V.That the Council be recom tended to gratj.li; the Company permission to occupy ""the 'streets and inform them that conditions of agreement; are being prepared. > ■ 3.
