Nominated for the Wairarapa Jockey Club Sires' Produoo Slakes, 1889. TO STAND THIS SEASON. rpho thoroughbred horse PURIRI. BBED by Mr H. Redwood in 1873, and is by Towton (imported) fiom Waimea by Sir Hercules-Flora Mclvor by Emigrant—Cornelia (imported) by Grasnhopper—Mahto (imported), Towton (owa brother to ilie Peer and Marchioness) by Melbourne, from Cinizelli by Touchstone— Brooado by, Pantaloon—Bombasine. Seo New Zealand or English Stud Book for Towton or Waimea's ancestors, Such is the breeding of a direct descendant of one of the most successful thoroughbred families of modern times,. . I As the dam of Manuka, Toi Toi, Harakcke, Totara',' Renga, Papapa, Wainui, Kauri, Waiiti, Kama Rama, and Puriri, old I name, and it would take a volume to recount the victories gained by the progeny of I the old mare. The mention of Puriri's ancestors will recall to breeders the victories in this Colony of Manuka, Peeress, Korari, Kakapo, Long" lands, Papapa, Laconfeed, Songster, Tarnburini, and a host of others, whilst in Victoria and New South Wales, the excellence of the Melboutno-Sir Hercules' cross shone out in Progress, whose sire, Angler, is from Towton's own sister, Marchioness, and dam, Coquette, is by Sir Hercules. Claiming close relationship, to so many great racehorses it is unnecessary to do more than briefly mention— ' That Waimea was' lull sister to Zoe, winner of two Australian Champion Races, aleo to Cossack. Bay Middletnn, Flora, 10, and Nutwith, the latter bo well known in this distriot as a sire, That Waimea's sire, Sir Hercules, was also sire of The Barb, and Yattendon, the latter for years the premier stallion of Australasia, who, in his turn, gave us Grand Flameur, Chester, and scores of other notables.
Towton s sister, Marchioness, won the English Oaks, and is the dam of Fishhook, Knee of Denmark, Angler, and King of Clubs, the latter is now in the middle Park Stud, Canterbury. That the Peer, Towton's brother, is the eire of Manuka, Peeress, Troy, and Darebin, That Manuka is the sire of Duchess, winner o! the V.R.O. Handicap, for three and four year olds, beating a good field. That Towton is the sire of Korari, Tambourini, Rama Rama, Soignter—aire of Hornby—Atalanta, dam of Pungawerewere, Waiti, dam of Iris, That the Marquis, who won the 2000 Guineas Stakes and St, Leger, subsequently running Caractacus to a head for the Derby, is now in the Bundoora Park Stud where Lurline is, and is half brother to Towton, being also a son of Cinizelli, and siro of the Painter, Newmuißter, His Lordßhip, &o. That Puriri as a racehorse amongst our very best performers stood quite in the first rank, 'whining the Duuedin Derby, beating Bribery, Fallacy, Hippocampus, Danebury, Dead Heat, mid Spray, and to quote from the report'' having all his field beaten half a mile from home, won hands down." Only Dead H>-at would oppose him in the Canterbury St. Leger, which Puriri also won in a canter. As an indux to the high cnaraoter Pnriri possessed when racing it is only necessary to state that he was handicapped ax a four yoar old to carry the crushing weight of 9st lib in the Canterbury Metropolitan Handicap, 1877,1J miles, and thea started at 2to 1 when Templcton, axed, only had 9st 31bs allotted to him, Ariel, s.yrs, 9st 81bs, and Foul Play, 3yrs, only carried 6st 71bs. Add to Puriii's undoubtedly high credentials for breeding and performances, that he stands over 16 hands with proportionate sutatanco all through, and owners of brood mares can form a fair eotinnte of the capabilities of the sire placed at their services for the ensuing season-whether for brecdiug racehorses, hacks, or carriage horses. Puriri has been at the. stud three years, and was awarded two first prizes and two champion prizes at Patca, and first prize at Wanganui, ilso the champion cup for the best thoroughbred on the ground, Torms.-£4 4s each mara; two or more by arrangement, payable Ist of January, 1885.
