THE EIGHT-HOUR MOVEMENT.

The Melbourne Age reports that Mr T. H. Dodson, the trades representative of New Zealand, at the eight hour demonstration held in Sydney, was entertained by Mr Benjamin Douglas, president of the Trades Hall Council, in Melbourne a week or two ago. "The executive officers of the Trades Hall were present by invitation and some of the most prominent advocates of the rights of labor in Victoria, to do honor to .Mr Dodson, who is the recognised leader in the ranks of labor in Duhedin." The toast of'' Mr Dodson and our fellow workman ih New Zealand" was proposed. Mr Dodson, "in reply-• ing to,.th<i- compliment, observed that the. eight-lxour system originated in New Zealand, bnt they had no i annual demonstrations in honor of it, for the simple reason tliat it bad been established by Captain Oargill when he founded Dunedin, and the people had never known what it was to work for longer hours. Prom what ha had witnessed in Melbourne and Sydney he thought that they might with advantage have an eight-hour association in Dunedin, and promised to see what could be done in the matter upon his return. They had a Trades and and Labor Council there, however, which represented all provinces, and whigh was highly appreciated for its usefulness, and he hoped soon to see a similar institution properly and satisfactorily established in Victoria.
