Nominated for tho Wairaropa Jockey Olnb Sires' Produce Slakes, 1889. TO STAND THIS SEASON, thoroughbred horse PURIRI. BRED by Mr H. Redwood in 1873, and is by Towton (imported) from Waimea by' Sir Hercules—Flora Mclvor by Emigrant— Cornelia (importe'l) by Grasuhopper—Manto (imported), Towton (owu brother to the Peer and Marchioness) by Melbourne, from Cinizolli by TouchstoneBrooado by Pantaloon—Bombasine. See New Zealand or English Stud Book for Towton or Waimea's ancestors. Such is the breeding of a direct descendant of one of the most successful thoroughbred families of modern times, As the dam of Manuka, Toi Toi, Har.v keke, Totara, Renga, Papapa, TVainui, Kauri, Waiiti, Kama Rama, and Puriri, old Waimea, has indeed left an imperishable name, and it would take a volume to recount the victories gained by the progeny of the old mare. The mention of Puriri'e ancestors will recall to breeders the victories in this Colony of Manuka, Peeress, Korari, Kakapo, Long" lands, Papapa, Lacenfeetl, Songster, Tarnburini, and a boat of others, whilst in Victoria and New South Wales, the excellence of the Melbourne—Sir Herculeß' cross shone out in Progress, whose sire, Angler, is from Towton's own sister, Marchioness, and wliosi dam, Coquette, is by Sir Hercules. Claiming close relationship to so many great racehorses it is unnecessary to o'.o mora than briefly mentionThat Waimea was full sister to Zoe, winner of two Australian Champion Races, also to Cossack, Bay Middletnn, Flora, 10, and Nutwith, the latter so well known in this district as a sire. That Waimea's sire, Sir Hercules, was also sire of The Barb, and Yattendon, the latter for years the premier stallion of Australasia, who, in his turn, ?&ve us Grand Flameur, Chester, and scores of other notables, Towton's Bister, Marchioness, won the English Oaks, and is the dam of Fishhook, Rose of Denmark, Angler, and King of Clubs, the latter is now in the middle Park Stud, Canterbury, _ That the Peer, Towton's brother, is the sire of Manuka, Peeress, Troy, and Darebin, That Manuka is the sire of Duchess, winucr o! the V.R.C. Handicap, for three and four year olds, beating a good field. That Towton is the sire of Korari, Tambourini, Rama Kama, So.igster—sire of Hornby—Atalanta, dam of Pungawerewere, Waiti, dam of Iris, That tho Marquis, who won the 2000 Guineas Stakes and St. Leger, subsequently running Caractacus to a head for the Derby, is now in the Bnndoora Park Stud where Lurline is, and is half brother to Towton, being also a son of Cmizelli, and siro of the Painter, Newininster, His Lordship. &c, That Puriri as a racehorse amongst our very best performers stood quite in the first ranty, winning the Dunedin Derby, beating Bribery, Fallacy, Hippocampus, Dauebury, Dead Ileat, raid Spray, aud to quote from the report " having all his field beaten half a mile from home, won hands dora." Only Dead H-at would oppose him in the Canterbury St, Leger, which Puriri also won in a canter. As an index to the high character Puriri possessed when racing it is only necessary to state that ho was bandicapoed as a four year old to carry the crushing weight of 9st lib in the Canterbury Metropolitan Handicap, 1877,1J miles, and tliea started at 2to 1 wlieu Templotou, aged, only had 9st 31bs allotted to him, Ariel, syrs, 9st 81bs, and Foul Play, 3yrs, only carried Csfc 71bs. Add to Puriti's undoubtedly high credentials for breeding and performances, that he stands over 1G hands with proportionate substance all through, and owners of brood mares can form a fair estimate of the capabilities of the sire placed at their services for the ensuing seasun-whether for breeding racehorses, hacks, or carriauo horses, Puriri has been at the stud three years, aud was awarded two first prizes and two champion prizes at Patea, and first prize at Wanganui, ilso the champion cup for the best thoroughbied on the ground.
