MoMASTER, Nominated for the Wairarapa Jookey Club Sires' Produce Slakes, 1889. BRED by Mr H. Redwood in 1873, and is by Towton (imported) from Waimea by Sir Hercules-Flora Mclvor by tiiuigrant—Cornelia (imported) by Grasn-hopper-Manto (imported), Towton (own brother to the Peer and Marchioness) hj Melbourne, from Ciuizelli by TouchstoneBrocado by Pautalora-Bombasine, See New Zealand or English Stud Book for Towton or Waimea's ancestors. Such is the breeding of a direct descendant of one of the most successful thoroughbred families of modern times, As the dam .of- Manuka, Toi Toi HaiaTotara, Eenga, Papapa, Wamui, Kauri, Wanti, Rama Rama, and Puriri, old Waimea, has indeed left an imperishable name, and it would take a. volume to recount the victories gained by the progeny of the old mare. The mention of Puriri's ancestors will recall to breeders the victories in this Colony of Manuka, Peeress, Korari, Kakapo, Long" lands, Papapa, Laoenfeed, Songster, Tarnburim, and a host of others, whilst in Victoria and New South Wales, the excellence of the Melbourne-Sir Hercules' cross shone out in Process, whose B ire, Angler, is from" TowtonV own eister, Marchioness, and whoso dam, Coquette, is by Sir Hercules. - . . Claiming dose relationship to so many great racehorses it is unnecessary to do more than briefly mentionThat Waimea was full sister to Zoe, winner of tiro Australian Champion Races, also to Cossack, Bay Middletnn, Flora, Io and Nulwith, the latter bo well known hi this distnot as a sire. That Waimea's sire, Sir Hercules, was also sire of The Barb, and Yattendon, the latter for years (he premier stallion of Australasia, who, in his turn, save us Grand Flameur, Chester, and scores of other notables. Towton *s sister, Marchioness, won the Miglisn Oaks, and is the dam of fishhook, Rose of Denmark, Angler, and King of Clubs, the latter is now in the middle Park Stud, Canterbury. # That the Peer, Towton's brother, is the sire of Manuka, Poereas, Troy, and Darebin, lnat Manuka is the sire of Duohoss, winner 0. the V.R.O. Handicap, for three and four yoar olds, boating* good field. That Towton isihe sire of Korari, Tambourini, Rama Rama, Songster—sire of Homby-Atalanta, dam of Pungawerewere, Waiti, dam of Iris, That the Marquis, who won the 2000 Guineas Stabs and St, Leger, subsequently running Caractacus to a head for the Derby, is now in the Bundoora Park Stud where Lurhneis, and is half brother to Towton, being also a son of Cinizelli, andeireofthe Painter, Newininster, His Lordship, io. That Puriri as a racehorse amongst our very best performers stood quite in the first rank, winning the Dunodia Derby, beating Bribery, Fallacy, Hippocampus, Danebury, Dead Heat, mid Spray, and to quote from the report " having all his field beatenhalf a milo from home, won hands dowi," Only Dead H-at would oppose him in the Canterbury St. Leger, which Puriri also won in a canter. As an index to the high cnaraoter Puriri possessed wheu racing it is only necessary to state that he was handicapned aa a four year old to carry the crushing weight of 9st lib in the Canterbury Metropolitan Handicap, 1877,1J miles, and Ihej started at 2to 1 when Tmnpleton, aged, only hadOst 31bs allotted to him, Ariel, syrs, 9st Bibs, and *oul Play, 3yrs, only carried 6st 71bs. _ Add to Puriri's undoubtedly high credentials for breeding and performances, that he stands over 1C hands with proportionate sui. stance all thtough. and owners of brood mares can form a fair estimate of the capabihties of the sire placed at their services for the ensuing season-whether for breeding racehorses, hacks, or carriaue horses. Puriri has been at the stud three years, and was awarded two first prizes and two champion prizes at Paten, and first prize at Wanganui, also the champion cup for the best tlioroughbied on the ground.
