MASTERTON HORTICULTURAL AND INDUSTRAL SOCIETY.

TnE attendance at the above show was very large yesterday. Over 800 people., paid at the door and members and family tickets must have made up the number of visitors to quite 1000. The band enlivened the evening with several well rendered selection's which were well worth the price of iidmission to listen to. The Committee proved itself to be a thorough working body and ; got. through their task well, by n fair division of labor. The Secretary Mr W. B. Ohennels showed every courtesy to the press in enabling them to get an early report, The judges appear to | have given every satisfaction although some of the non prize takers in the poultry class expressed an unfavorable opinion of their capabilities, We omitted to mention in our report yesterday a very pretty design of a; country residence, ths miniature buildings representing a country church and manse and a water mill and stream in the distance, the paths, trees, and mosses had a beautiful efl'ect. The' design and execution was by Mr Alfred Booth of Carterton. Captain Laimbeer of Fealherston had a very good exhibit of Wanganni wines. These wines are, fast taking the place of the imported article, For purity they cannot be equalled and only require age to give them that mellowness that can be produced no other way, •The show of Poultry and Pigeons was a really good one, both for qttati-1 tity and quality of exhibits, and was-a credit to the district, The whole of the district was well represented, there being exhibits from Wellington, Featherston, Greyrown, and Carterton; Masterton of course putting in the lion's share. As usual Mr A. Elkins heads the list of prize winners in both poultry and pigeons, His only opponent in the latter class was Mr W. L. Curtis, of Wellington, and the honors were very evenly divided. .Mr Curtis exhibited a magnificent carrier cock, but unfortunately the catalogue specified that the birds should be shown in pairs and consequently the judges were unable to award him a prize. The Kumage of the poultry in most classes Bowed wear. This to a great extent W>l he avoided by holding the show stately, earlier in the season, We behiive it is the intention of fhose interested to start next year a Poultry Club, which will be a step in the right direction, as the show yesterday proved conclusively that the district is ripe for such a society, This would give more room for the proper display of the birds, the want of space yesterday tending to crowd exhibits, some-of which could not be seen to the best advantage. Another point which should be insisted upon is that the coops be made of the exact regulation size, Yesterday pens were sent in of all sizes and shapes,'giving the display a rather higgledy-piggledy appearance. However, the stagers did the best they could, and placed all the exhibits to the best advantage compatible with the space at their command. The judges were Messrs Burton Boys (Carterton; and F. J. France (Wellington), and in most cases their decisions gave entire satisfaction. We will now give a brief description of the various classes in the order in which they appear on the catalogue. The first on the list were ■ White Dorkings, which were represented by one pen, exhibited by Mr J,. D. Oakly, of Feaiherston, and took a first prize. The pair was very nice 'in plumage andshape, but rather inolined to be small and the cock standing a little too high. In

Silver.Grey Dorkings there were four. entries, Mr EJkins taking first with a good pair, Mr F. Gray coming second, and Mr J. Stone highly commended. Tho latter pair were very small, and the breast of the cock in the fourth entry showed nearly as much • white as black, ' There were three entries in

Colored Dorkings, the pride of place falling to MrT.J, James, who showed a splendid pair, the rooster especially being a grand bird and a long' way ahead of the othera in this class. Mr P. Gray took second prize with a very good pen. In

Golden Spangled Hamburqs there wero only two entries, Mr T, J. James taking honors with first class birds. The cock in tho other pen was very good, but the hen with him spoilt his chance.

Golden Pencilled. In this class there were three entries, but none of them were n'rsc class, Mr W. G, King (Carterton)'took first place with a neat pen, though the hen was rather light, Mr Uakly coming second with fair birds, but the feet of the cock and the comb ot the hen were not first rate. The third exhibit, Mr Elkins', was passed over by the judges on account of the hen having white specs in the plumage. The strongest competition was in

Silver Spangled, Mr Elkins getting first honors with a really good pen, Mr Oaklv running biin very close for second place. The former gentleman was also highly corn mended for a nice pen, Mr King's exhibit, though otherwise fair, had indifferent earlobes. In

Silver Pencilled Mr Elkins had all his own way, there being only his own two entries. Ho took first prije with ono and was

highly commended for the other. There were.three competitors in the '! Black Spanish- -•/•'■•'• elassfMr Oakly taking fh/Bt and second. • Mr KlkinV'birds were dispjJMed by having 'a '.white feather iti'i wing. Undoubtedly'the hat-pen. injliis class. was that, shown by Sir H,'^Beetlisftv' but tliis"gentle.man unfortunately made | a mistake in entering them and thy .were not judged; -The-'.:'; ':'.■:'. ~".".'D. J Houdans • were represented by two pens, Mr I. G. Price taking first, prize with an excellent pair, Mr oakly coming '.seconi The latter p»n; jlidugh of good size and nicely shaped, were rather too dark in plumage, In Lanqshans there was but one competitor, Mr \ Harrison securing*.first prize.' Thesa were badly cooped;and appeared rather out of condition, ..There, were two entries in

Black Red Game, Mi- Elkins 'again coming to. the fore with a njee pon, vbough-the rooster carried his tail rather high;: The'same fault appeared in all the game shown, the wings ilso being too tightly pressed into the body. Mr Oakly was commended, the cock being a very strong bird,, but too dark, . Ginger Eed Game,

In this class there was only one entry, Mi Elkins being highly commended. The rooster was a fair bird but the hen was too leggy to please the judges. Dockwiko Game, In this class there was no competition, Mr Ulkins taking first prize with a nice pen. Pile Game. .Mr Elkins had a peif'exhibited, but the quality .'was very indifi'erent, and he only received a second prize. An Undubbed Game Cock, shown by the same exhibitor; was passed over as being too small arid of no shape, The same gentleman also took first honors with a good pen of BuFf Cochins, the.-cock being an enormous bird, but rat)ier-out.of condition. In. Cartridge Cochins there was ' only "one entry, by Mr Oakly, but these were passed over, the judges considering the cock far too leggy- ... Dark Brahmas. ■_ Mr Oakly • received a first prize' for his pon over twelve months, though the sickles of the cock, were rather long. For under 12 -months, he was highly commended, the cock having the same fault as the Partridge Cochin. In

Light Biuhmas over twelve months, there was only one entry, Mr J, Payton showing a pair ot imported birds, which have evidently not yet recovered from their voyage, and being vulture-hocked (which appears to be an abomination in the eyes of New Zealand judges, though it is the fashion at Home), they were passed. Several nice pens under twelve months'were shown, Mr G. Beere getting first, nnd Mr H, Clay coming very close with second. White Leghorn's. Mr F, Seed took a first prize with a lair pen, though, they were rather out of condition. Messrs McKenzie and Bright exhibited a pair of chickens in this class. Brows Leohorns were represented by a pair of young birds exhibited by Messrs McKenzie and Bright from a pen recently imported from EnglandO by them. These were very perfect and received a Hist prize. The same exhibitors also showed a pair of imported Plymouth Bocks, which appeared to excite a good deal of admiration, and though the plumage was very much out of condition by the long voyage, they took first honors. Golden Spangled Polish, In this class there were two entries. Mr Elkins taking first with one and being highly commended with the .other, White-ckebted Black were represented by one" pen shown by Messrs McKenzie aud Bright, but they. were passed by the judges.because they had black feathers in the "crest—a mißtake. In . Red Game Bantams there were three entries, Mr Elkins taking first and Mr Oakly second with very' neat birds. The other exhibit, being ucdubbed, had no chance, ..The best pair ,of pure, bred poultry, not specified was represented by a pen of Andalusians " shown by Messrs McKenzie & Bright, and received a first prize, the rooster being an exceptionally fine bird. Best Cock in the Show. In this class there were four entries, and after close competition between Mr King's Dark Brahma and Messrs McKenzie and Bright's imported Brown Leghorn, first place was allotted to the former.

Bust Hen in the Show, . There was more competition in this class than in any other in the show, there being six entries. The judges had no difficulty in awarding first honors to Messrs McKenzie and Blight's imported Plymouth Rock hen, Mr King coming second with a Cochin hen. A Brown Leghorn pullet, shown by the first prize winners, was well spoken of by the judges, but was too young to compete with the older birds. A couple of Houdau hens wero also exhibited, but though of fair size, the legs and plumage were not first class. The Best Pen in the Showproved to be a close competition between Mr Elkins 1 DuckwingGame and Messrs McKenzie and Blight's Ply. month Piocks, and had the hitter been in better plumage the judges said they would have had no hesitation in awarding them first prize. AYLESBURY DUCKS.

Two entries. Mr King took the Ist prize with a line trio, Mr Elkins being highly commended, though they were much smaller than the first prize

winners. Mr Elkins also exhibited a Mnscovey drakq and difiik, but as the catalogue specified-two ducks, te did 'riot receive a prize. ••;• .... . -.,-:•"''. : Mr-Elkinstakes.trie prices for'the greatest number ;of points' in poultry; ■and pigeons. ■■■■■'...'■..'. .-.
