CORRESPONDENCE.

THE MUNGAPAKEHA -BRIDGE,

To the Editor. Sir,- —Kindly allow me to say a. few words about-supposed favors showed to contractors by Mr King, theii County WMh Iwas about .firfishedVaV .the ManaWa Bridge, Mr King came-up to inspect, the Badge. I asked. him then if McKenzie was finished, he told me that McKenzie was in Masterton, but he would have to come back to take out a strut and do some other alteration. Ho was very sorry, but "if you contraclori will not do pur work according to plans, you must suffer ' for it," were the words made use of. Some few days after I went to give a hand to Mr McKenzie to put the new strut in place, I was astonished that any Engineer would condemn a first-class large piece of timber for no other -reason than that it had two small washers let in the wood so that the lolts would have full nut. Mr King could have easily helped the contractor .out of the strut difficulty if he wanted to do him a favor. I think it would only be doing him justice, that is by allowing him to put two other washers of a larger size on top of those already there,' I'think that would satisfy any reasonable Engineer, I should say that to put. a strut in the Mungapakeha bridge would cost Mr McKenzie about £lO. "' It could have been easily done before he took down his staging and had his plant upon the ground. But to go back to the job with plant and get new staging made a lot of difference. Apologising for taking so much" ptyour.valuable space. • • .lam.k, John MoDokald. 'Contractor
