TINUI.
[From our own Correspondent.] Mr Hawkins' meeting last week stirred up a little life in our township, and even yet the topic of roads v. railways is being discussed ireely. Two opinions seem. to exist here on the qaeation, one being no railway extension and all roads—the other the continuation of the railway to Eketahuna and the balance of the money devoted to roads, It is pretty evident that if some compromise is not made that the relations between tho Forty-Mile Bush and others in the county will be stirred to a tension that may work mischief. My humble opinion is that the rail should go to Eketahuna, £BO,OOO to I roads, and the balance in making a railway towards A lfredton with the ultimate view of carrying it on up the Tiraumea Valley,, via. Puketoi, to Danevirk.
Wool is coming into Tinui daily en route for Castlepoint, The shearing is progressing favorably, 'MessrsMaunsell's and Elder's oommenced on Monday last, At lea the work was completed on the 19 th, and shearers from there ha\e proceeded to Mr Hawkins'. The Mafcaikuna tool will be cut out about the 25th.
The members of the Licensing Commitee refused to grant a temporary transfer of the Club Hotel, Castlepoint, from Mr Ramsey to Mr John Hare. ■ through Mr R.R. Meredith's resignation there failed to be a quorum of Road Board members present to transact business on Saturday last. It appears Mr Meredith inadvertently tqok a small contract from the overseer to the Board, and thus rendered himself incapable of sitting as a member. Members of local bodies would do well to study the Aots. which affect them. Mr Meredith, I am glad to see, seeks re-election. It is reported that Mr H. Elder will come forward and contest the seat, It would not be surprising to see the late member head the poll by some four votes. Year after year our school examination has been put off till after the Jjplidays, Jt is little use to expect a change, for th'e'oustom appears to have become chronic,
Subscriptions to liquidate the debt on that useful building, our public ball, have come in fairly well, the amount yet required being some £SO. An individual signing himself' Tinui' writes to your contemporary and'attacks both County and Road Board, and does not even, leave the Overseer, Mr Perry, alone. I have made some enquiry into the statements made by 'Tinui' and find that instead of two men the .Overseer has not less than eight men spattered over a large district to look after. Mr Perry's energy is so well known that it is needless for me to remark upon it. Drays are now beginning to work through the Mungapakeha, and we shall, I hope, soon welcome the advent of Mr Nejil's coaoh,
As tin 1 ' illustration of the way settlers are treated here who buy land from the Crown I may state that Messra'Groves, Burling, Stilton, Cripps, and others who have purchased sections in the vicinity of the head waters of the Mungapakeha cannot get a sixpence from Government to make tracks to their land. Altogether the Treasury received some £SOOO trom laud saleg in this district last year. Not a oent oan we get in return. In reply to a letter from the Road Board the Government stated Parliament had made no appropriation. It seems to us that they may have appropriated the whole amount somewhere in Wellington. Our representative should take note of this.
Qur long promised Castlepoint jetty is as-far off in reality as ever. Year after year Parliament votes £ISOO or £IBOO for a work that the Public Works engineer planned to cost £2500, If we could get. this grant handed over for metalling some of the roads, it would be of some service.
