I Nominated for the Wairarapa Jockey Club Sires' Produce Slakes, 1889. TO STAND THIS SEASON. mhe thoroughbred horse PURIRI. BRED by Mr H. Redwood in 1873, and is by Towton (imported) from Waiinea by Sir Hercules-Flora Mclvor by Emigrant-Cornelia (impnrtcl) by Grasn-hopper-Manto (imported), Towton (own brother to the Peer and Marchioness) b> Melbourne, from Cinizelli by Touchstone— Brooado by PanMoon-Bombasino. See New Zealand or English Stud Book for Towton or Waimea's ancestors, Such is the breeding of a direct descendant of one of the most successful thoroughbred families of modern times, As tlio dam of Manuka, Toi Tol, Harakeke, Totara, Renga, Papapa, Wainui, Kauri, Waiiti, Kama Kama, and Puviri, old Waimea, has indeed left an imperishable name, and it; would take a volume to recount the victories gained by the progeny of the old mare. The mention of Puriri's ancestors will recall to breeders the victories in this Colony of Manuka, Peeress, Koran, Kaknpo, Longlands, Papapa, Lacenfeed, Songster, Tarnburini, and a host of others, whdst in Victoria and New South Wales, the excellence of the Melbourne-Sir Hercules' cross shone out in Process, whose sire, Angler, ib from Towton's own sister, Marchioness, and whose dam, Coquetto, is by Sir Hercules. Claiming close relationship to so many great racehorses it is unnecessary to <>!o more than briefly mentionThat Waimea was full sister to Zoe, winner of two Australian Champion Raeen, also to Cossack. Bay Middleton, Flora, Io and Nutwith, the latter so well known in this distriot as a sire. That Waimea's sire, Sir Hercules, was also sire of The Barb, and Yattendon, the latter for years the premier stallion of Australasia, who, in his turn, gave us Grand Flamour, Chester, and scores of other notables, Towton's sister, Marchioness, won the English Oaks, and is the dam of Fishhook, KoB9 o£ Demnark, Angler, and King of Clubs, the latter is now in the middle Park Stud, Canterbury. That tho Peer, Towton's brother, is the sire of Manuka, Peeress, Troy, and Darebm. That Manuka is tho sirs of Duohesß, winner o! the V.R.C. Handioap, for three and four That Towton is the sire of Korari, Tambourini, Rama Rama, Songster—aire of Homby-Atal&nta, dam of Puiurawerewere, Waiti, dam of Iris. 3'hafc the Marquis, who won the 2000 Guinoas Stakes and St. Legor, subsequently running Caraotaous to a head for the Derby, is now in the Bundoora Park Stud where Lurline is, and is half brother to Towton, being also a son of Cinizelli, and sire of the Painter, Newminster, His Lordship, &e, That Puriri as a racehorse amongst our very best performers stood quite in the first rank, winning the Dunedin Derby, beating Bribery, Fallacy, Hippocampus, Danebury, Dead Heat, trad Spray, and to quote from the report" having all his field beaten half a mile Irom home, won hands down." Ouly Dead H-at would oppose him in the Canterbury St, Legor, which Puriri also won in a canter. As an index to the high cnaraoter Puriri possessed when racing it is only necessary to state that he was handicapped a.s a four year old to carry tho crushing weight of 9st lib m the Canterbury Metropolitan Handicap, 1877,1J miles, and then started at 2to 1 when Templeton, aged, only had 9st 31bs allotted to him, Ariel, fiyrs, 9sfc 81bs, and Foul Play, 3yrs, only carried 6st 71bs. _ Add to Puriii's undoubtedly high credentials for breeding and performances, that he stands over 1C hands with proportionate substance all through, and owners of brood mares can form a fair estimate of the capabilities of the sire placed at their services for the ensuing season-whether for breeding racehorses, hacks, or carriage horses. Puriri has been at the stud three years, and was awarded two first prizes and two champion prizes at Patca, and first prize at Wangamii, also the champion cup for the best thoroughbred on the ground, Terms.-£44s each mare; two or more by arrangement, payable Ist of January, 1885. EUFUS, bred by Mr Walter Morrison, at Manaia,, admittedly comes from a pure Clydesdale strain on both sides, and bears evidence of this by tho f.ct that, as regards size, bone, powerful build, symmetry, and height, he is equal to the finest horse that has yet been imported, and is acknowledged the best 3 year old colt ever shown in this district, Terms: £3, guarantee, £4los, Payable by P.N,, due Ist January, 1885, Two or more mares as per agreement.
