See New Zealand m English Stud Book for Towton or Waimea's ancestors, Such is the breeding of a direct descendant of one of the most successful thoroughbred iamilies of modern tin.es. As the dam of Manuka, Toi Toi, Harakoke, Totara,; fieuga, Papapa, Wninui, Kauri, Waiiti, Kama Rama, and Puriri, old Waimea, has indeed left an imperishable name, and it would take a volume to recount the victories gamed by the progeny of the old mare. The mention of Puriri's ancestors will recall to breeders the victories in this Colony uf Manuka, Peeress, Korari, Kakapo, Long" lands, Papapa, Lacenfeed, Songster, Tarnburiui, and a host of others, whilst in Victoria and New South Wales, tho excellence of the Melbourne-Sir Hercules' orosß shone.out in Progress, whose sire, Angler, i.B from Towton's own Bister, Marchioness, aud whos? dam, Coquette, is by Sir Hercules, Claiming close relationship to so many great racehorses it is unnecessary to do more than briefly mentionThat Waimea was full sister to Zoe, winner of two Australian Champion Races, also to Cossaok. Bay Middleton, Flora, Io and Nutwitb, the latter so well known in this distriot as a sire. That Waimea's sire, Sir Hercules, was also sire of The Barb, and Yattendon, tho latter for years the premier stallion of Australasia, who, in his' turn, gave us Grand Flameur, Chester, and scores of other notables. Towton's Bister, Marchioness, won the English Oaks, and is the dam of Fishhook, Rose of Denmark, Angler, and King of Clubs, the latter is now in the middle Park Stud, Canterbury. _ That the Peer, Towtpn'a brother, is tlje sire of Manuka, Peeress, Troy, and Darebin, That Manuka is the sire of Duchess, winner o! the V.R.C. Handicap, for three and four year olds, beating a good field. That'Towton is the sire of Koran, Tamhourini, Rama Rania,' Soigster-siro of Hornby-Atalanta, dam of Pungawerewere, Waiti, dam of Iris, That tho Marquis, who won the 2000 Guineas Stakes anil St. Leger, subsequently running Caraotacus to a head for the Derby; is now in the Bundoora Park Stud where Lurline is, and is half brother to Towton, being also a son of Cinizelli, and eirp of tlie Painter, Newminster, His Lordship. &o, That Puriri as a racehorse amongst our very best performers stood quito in the first rank, winning the Dunedih Derby, beating Bribery, Fallacy, Hippocampus, Danebury, Dead neat, mid Spray, and to quote from the report" having all his field beaten half a mile from home, won hands dora." Only Dead H-at would oppose him in the Canterbury St, Leger, which Puriri also won in a canter, As an index to the bigji c.iaracter Puriri possessed when racing it is only necessary to state that he was handicapued as a four year old to carry the crushing weight of 9st llbin the Canterbury Metropolitan Handicap, 1877,1J miles, and thea startod at 2b 1 when Templetou, aged, only had 9st 31bs allotted to him, Ariel, fiyrs, 9st 81bs, and Foul Play, 3yrs,only carriedGst7lbs. _ Add to Puriii's undoubtedly Jiigb credentials for breeding and performances, that he stands over 1G hands with proportionate sui-stance all through, and owners of brood mares can form a fair estimate of the capabilities of the sire placed at their sorvices for the ensuing season--whether for breeding racehorses, hacks, or carriage horses, Puriri has been at the stud three years, and was awarded j;wo first prizes and two champion prizes at Patca, and first prize at Waugantii, also the champion pup for the beßt thoroughbred on the ground, Terms—£44s each mare; two or more by arrangement, payable Jet of January, 1886.
