MORTGAGES ON PROPERTY.

Some interesting figures regarding the extent to which borrowing on mortgage is carried on in the colony are contained in the annual report of the Land' Transfer and Deeds Registration Department for 1883-84. It appears that the'total amount secured by'mortgagees during the year ending j 31st March 18S4 was £4,072,308. \ The amount of mortgages paid off during the same period was £3,038,044, and the amount remain- ' ing secured by mortgage' on the 31afc ' March last was-£24,412,243. ' The ' amount of money secured by'the now mortgages in 188.3-84 was- only about two-thirds the amount' in**ißß2-83.
