Such is the breeding of a direct descendit of one of the most successful thoroughbred families of modern times, As the dam of Manuka, Toi TOl, Harakeke, Totara, Pienga, Papapa, Wainui, Kauri, Waiiti, Rama Rama, and Puriri, old Waiinea, has indeed left an imperishable name, audit would take a volume to recount the victories gained by tlier profeeny of the old mare. - The mention of Puriri's ancestors will recall to breeders the victories in this Colony of Manuka, Peeress, Korari, Kakapo, Long" lands, Papapa, Lacenfeed, Songster, Tarnburini, and a host of others, whilst in Victoria and New South Wales, the excellence of the Melbourne-Sir Hercules' cross shone out in Progress, whose sire, Angler, is from Towton's own sister, Marchioness, and whos l ) dam, Coquette, is by Sir Hercules. Claiming close relationship to so many great racehorses it is unnecessary to tlo more than briefly mentionThat Waimea was full sister to Zoe, winner of tiro Australian Champion Racea, also to Cossack. Bay Middleton, Flora, 10, and Nutwith, the latter so well known in this distriot as a sire. That Waimea's sire, Sir Hercules, was also aire of The Barb, and Yattendon, the latter for years the premier stallion of Australasia, who,' in his turn, gave us Grand Flameur, Chester, and scores of other notables, • Towton's Bister, _ Marchioness, won the English Oaks, and is the dam of Fishhook, Rose of Denmark, Angler, and King of Clubs, the latter is now in the middle Park Stud, Canterbury, _ That the Peer, Towton's brother, is the sire of Manuka, Peeress, Troy, and Darebin, That Manuka is the aire of Duchess, winner o! the V.R.C. That Puriri as a racehorse amongst our very best performers stood quite in the first rank, winning the Dunedin Derby, beating Bribery, Fallacy, Hippocampus, Danebury, Dead Heat, sud Spray, anil to quote from the report" having all his field beaten half a mile from home, won hands dom." Only Dead H-at would oppose him in the Canterbury St, Leger, which Puriri also won in a canter. As an index to the high character Puriri possessed when racing it is only neoessary to state that he was hatidicapned as a four year old to carry the crushing weight of 9st lib in the Canterbury Metropolitan Handicap, 1877,1} miles, anil tliej started at 2to 1 when Templeton, aged, only had 9st 31bs allotted to him, Ariel, syrs, 9st 81bs, and Foul Play, 3yrs, only carried Cst 7ibs, _ Add to Puriii's undoubtedly high credentials for breeding and performances, that he stands over 16 hands with proportionate sul-etancc all through, and owners of brood mares can form a fair estiunte of the capabilities of the sire placed at their services for the ensuing season •-whethor for bree * racehorses, hacks, or carriaue horses.
