The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1884. THE NORTH WAIRARAPA DEPUTATION.

* The North Wairarapa deputationwaited last evening on the Hon. the Minister for Public Works. We learn that Mr Richardson was very guarded in his replies but that he appeared favorably impressed with the proposals made. At any rate he has given the deputation sufficient encouragement to justify them in taking further steps by laying before the Government a detailed proposal of road works required, supported by proper plans and estimates. Of course to do this will involve some considerable trouble and expenditure, and it is desirable that the new County Council should undertake this responsibility. The prospect of such proposals being carried through the House next session is by no means an assured one, but if the Government are willing to back them up it is worth while making an effort to carry them through. So far Mr Hawkins has been more successful than we thought he would be with his project, and no doubt he will make every effort to bring it to a successful issue,

As Mr McCardle is an opponent to the County system, we hope to see Messrs Macquarie and P. Von Kedin returned. The contest is a very open one, bnt the chances, we believe, are in favor of Messrs Macquarie and Von Redin. At the nominations for the election nf members cf the Wairarapa West Oous.ty Council, Messrs W. C. Buchanan, and H. R, Bunny for the Gladstone Biding, Coleman Phillips for Greyfcown Riding, and H. R. There was wrangling in the RM. These native ladies had been quaffing the the flowing bnwl, and from quaffing they got on to chaffing, and then proceeded to scolding one another. The next stage was, unless the native language is innocent of bad words, "swearing." Then tUB viragos rolled their eyes, put out their tongues, and squared at each other wuli closed fists. A delighted orowd made a ring and cheered them on, but the con> batants made slow work with clenched hands and relapsed into the more fominme alternative of clutching at each other's hair. The onlookers, however, deemed this an unfair competition, as one. lady had luxuriant locks and the other was shorn and shaven till her head was like a billiard ball, so they separated the belle-igerents,
