See New Zealand or English Stud Book for Towton or Waimea's ancestors, Such is the breeding of a direct descendant of one of the most successful thorough bred families of modern times. As tlie dam of Manuka, Toi TOl, Harakeke, Totara, Eenga, Papapa, Wainui, Kauri, Waiiti, Rama Kama, and Puriri. old Waimea, has indeed left an imperishable name, and it would take a volume to re count the victories gamed by the progeuy of the old mare. The mention of Puriri's ancestors will recall to breeders the victories in this Colony of Manuka, Peeress, Korari, Kakapo, Long" lands, Papapa, Lacenfeed, Songster, Tarnburini, and a lioat of others, whilst in Victoria and New South Wales, the excel-
Icuce of the Melbourne--Sir Hercules' cross" shone out in Progress, whose Bite, Angler, is from Towton's own Bißter, Marchioness, and whos<j dam, Coquetto, jb by Sir Hercules. Claiming close relationship to so many great racehorses it is unnecessary to ('.o more than briefly mentionThat Waimea was full sister to Zoo, winner of tivo Australian Champion Eaoen, also to Cossack. Bay MiddUnn, Flora, Io and Nutwith, the latter so well known hi this district as a sire. That Waimea's sire, Sir Hercules, was also sire of The Barb, and Yattendon, the latter for years the premier stallion of Australasia, who, in his turn, save us Grand Flameur, Chester, and scores of other notables. . Towton's sister, Marchiones?, won tho English Oaks, and is the dam of Fishhook, Hose of Denmark, Angler, and King of Glubs, the latter is now in the middle Park Stud, Canterbury. That Towton is the siro of Korari, Tambourini, Rama Kama, So 'guter—sire of Hornby—Ata'anta, dam of Pungaworowere, Waiti, dam of Iris, That the Marquis, who won the 2000 Guineas Stakes and St. Legcr, subsequently running Caractaous to a head for the Derby, is now in the Bundoora Park Stud where Lurlino is, and is half brother to Towton, being also a sou of Cinizelli, and siro of the Painter, Newminstcr, His Lordship. &o, That Puriri as a racehorse amongst our very best per formers stood quite in the first rank, winning the Uuncdiu Derby, beating Bribery, Fallacy, Hippocampus, Danebury, Dead neat, tind Spray, and to quote from the report" having all Mb field beaten half a mile from home, won hands dom." Only Dead H-at would oppose him in the Canterbury St, Leger, which Puriri also won in a canter. As an index to the high cnaracter Puriri poßsossed when racing it is only neoessary to state that he was handioapned as a four year old to carry tho crushing weight of 9st lib in the Canterbury Metropolitan Handicap, 1877,1J miles, and thoj started at 2to 1 when Teraploton, aged, only had 9ab ijlbs allotted to him, Ariel, syrs, 9st Blbs, and Foul Play, 3yrs, only carried 6st 7lbs. _ Add to Puriii's undoubtedly high credentials for breeding and performances, that he stands over 16 hands with proportionate Eul-stance all through, and owners of brood mares can form a fair estimate of tho capabilities of the sire placed at their services for the ensuing season .whether for breeding racehorses, hacks, or carriaue horses, Puriri has boen at the stud three years, and was awarded two first prizes and two champion prizes at Patca, and first prize at Wanganni, also tho champion cup for the best thoroughbred on tho ground.
