Bedwood in 1873, and is by Towton (imported) from Waimea by Sir Hercules-Flora Molvor by Emigrant-Cornelia (imported) by Grasu-hopper-Mnnto (imported), Towton (own brother to the Peer and Marchioness) b> Melbourne, from Cinizelli by TouchstoneBrocado by Pantaloon-Bombasine. See New Zealand w English Stud Book for Towton or Waimea's ancestors. Such is the breeding; of a direct descendant of one of the most successful thoroughbred lamilies of modern times, As the dam of Manuka, Toi Toi, Harakeke, Totara, Eenga, Papapa, Wainui, Kauri, Waiiti, Kama Kama, and Puriri, old Waimea, has indeed left an imperishable name, and it would take a volume to recount the victories gained by the progeny of the old mare. The mention of Puriri's ancestors will recall to breeders the victories in this Colony of Manuka, Peeress, 'Korari, Kakapo, Longlands, Papapa, Lacenfeed, Songster, Tarnburini, and a host of others, whilst in Victoria and New South Wales, the excellence of the Melbourne-Sir Hercules' cross shone out iu Progress, whose sire, Angler, is from ( Towton's own sister, Marchioness, and whosis dam, Coquetto, is by Sir Hercules, ■;.«.» lignum™ ut ,3 unnecessary to do more than briefly mentionThat Waimea was full sister to Zoe, winner of two Australian Champion fiaoeii, also to Cossack. Bay Middletnn, Flora, Io and NoMtli, the latter so well known hi this district as a sire, That Waimea's sire, Sir Hercules, was also sire of The Barb, and Yattendon, the latter for years the premier stallion of Australasia, who, in his turn, gave us Grand Flamcur, Chester, and scores of other notables. Towton's sister, Marchioness, won the English Oaks, and is the dam of Fishhook, Kose of Denmark, Angler, and King of Clubs, the latter is now in the middle Park Stud, Canterbury, That the Peer, Towton's brother, is the sire of Manuka, Peeress, Troy, and Darebin, That Manuka is the sire oi Dnohess, winner o!thoV,B.C. Handicap, for three and four year olds, beating a good field, That Towton is the sire of Korari, Tambourini, Kama Kama, Songster-sire of Hornby-Ata'anta, dam of Pungawerewere, Waiti, dam of Ids, That the Marquis, who won the 2000 Guineas Stakes and St. Lager, subsequently running Caractacus to a head for the Derby, is now in the Bundoora Park Stud where Lurhne is, and is half brother to Towton, being also a son of Cinizelli, and sire of the Painter, Newminster, His Lordship. &o. That Puriri as a racehorse amongst our very best performers stood quite in the first rank, winning the Uunedin Derby, beating Bribery, Fallacy, Hippocampus, Danebury, Dead Heat, mid Spray, and to quote from the report " liavinr; all his field beaten half a mile from home, won hands dora." Only Dead H-at would oppose him in the Canterbury St. Leger, which Puriri also won in a canter. As an index to the high cnaracter Puriri possessed when racing it is only necessary to state that he was handicapped as a four year old to carry the crushing weight of 9st lib in the Canterbury Metropolitan Handicap, 1877,1J miles, and thej started at 2 fr) 1 when Templeton, aged, only had U 31bs allotted to him, Ariel, s,yrs, 9st 81bs, and Foul Play, 3yrs, only carried 6st 71bs. Add to Puriii's undoubtedly high credentials for breeding and performances, that he Btands over 16 bands with proportionate sul-stance all through, and owners of brood mares can form a fair estimate of the capabilities of the sire placed at their services for the ensuing season-whethcr for breeding racehorses, hacks, or carriage horses. Puriri has beeu at the stud three years, and was awarded two first prizes and two champion prizes at Patca, and first prize at Wauganui, also the champion cup for the best thoroughbred on the ground, Terms.-£44s each mare; two or more by arrangement, payable Ist of January, 1885.
