COUNTY SETTLERS' ASSOCIATION.
To the Editor. Sir,—The suggestion made by you in yesterday's issue re forming the County Settlers' Association into a mimio Parliament is a good one, in fact it' something of this kind is not done the Association will soon be a thing of the past. Since, as you say, J» agricultural element soceded, thew ciety has been purely a political oneaye, and a party one too-so far as the President is concerned, who to all intents and purposes has been the head and tail of the concern, Now,Vl think that Mr Hawkins would not object to being Premier (even of a mimic Parliament), and could, I am sate,.'rally/* around him a good Ministry, Of courso''* lie would have opposition;".which would be necessary to keep him and his Ministry in check, I trust the Association will see their way clear to Ejive effect to your suggestion. If it does, I am sure it will public support. Political questions both local and general could in my humble opinion be discussed better and with equal results as they could under the auspices of the present Association. I am, <L'c, A Membek CS.A.
MR REESE. || To THE EdITO?.. Sir—ln your issue of yesterday Mr Reese has published a letter in which I am asked various questions. If I al- J&& lowed this letter to pasSjin silence those ffifijP who do not know the facts of the Case' ***'*' 'might infer that I was disinclined to investigate the charges made. There is no desire on my part, nor do I believe there is on the part of the Council, to shirk the fullest enquiry into the questions referred to by Mr Reese. Before going further I would askyonr readers to bear in mind the following facts:—Mr Reese's letter conininin" charges against the Council, was handed to rae at 2 o'clock on the day of the last meeting (the hour at which the Council began business), and I think it will be obvious to all that the Council could not then, in the absence of the Engineer, produce all the documents relating to the charges. The Council consequently determined to refer the matter to a committee befosgi i which a full examination would w| made into the charges of Mr .Reese. ftW is not therefore my intention to antict- ' pate the work of the committee by imswering the questions contained in" Mi Reese's letter of the 16th. The committee has been appointed for the veiy purpose of examining into these questions, and if Mr Reese will oxer* oise a little patience he will find it follow prepared to consider the matter in al* its bearings. I would also ask your, readers to defer passing sentence til) • the case has been tried. Mr Reese' has thought proper to publish a part of '■ '■' a conversation which he had with me, and I desire now to state that I still:. 1 believe on examination it will be found that Mr Reese has made. " much to-do ' out of nothing.. I am, &c, D, McGregor,
