WATER SUPPLY.
To the Editor.
Sir,—Some eighteen months ago I proposed a scheme similar to the one proposed by Mr Beetham, in your issue of the ninth inst,, but one or two individuals to whom I mentioned it' only ridiculed the idea so I said no more. My scheme was a more expensive one than Mr Beetham's yet I believe if the levels are suitable it would prove the best and cheapest in the long run, It was as follows From some suitable place in the •Waipoua orKuamahunga river make a small canal to the top of Mr; Adams' bank, there make a reservoir or other works that might be necessary for filtering the water to supply the town for domestic and fire purposes, The rest of the water could be utilised for motive power, part to be used if deemed necessary for generating electricity to light the town. The rest could be leased to any persons that required it to drive machinery of any kind, which in a few years would.probably bring in a good revenue, more : particularly as' firewood will soon be scarce in the neighborhood of the town which means an increase in the cost of fuel for steam-engines, Yours lie,, • Progression.
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—Would you kindly allow, me a reply to Mr Dowling's letter in your last night's issue, To begin with, I may state that I have no "ulterior purpose" to serve only that of right and truth) so that I still consider my statements both called for and true, - Indeed they are so far true that I have the assurance of their truth by several Irishmen who have done, more contracts under the County than Mr Dowliug. In fact I don't remember him doing but one contraol under the County, and if I am not mistaken in ray, man, it waß he who rolled into me at Dixon's corner the other night, and in his own peculiar and confiding manner (when three seas over) assured me he was " going for them"; in fact "had it in the. lawyer's hands, whioh was more than I was game to do," aud so on; In conclusion let me say that I have no desire to ventilate this .particular subjeofc as it concerns the Engineer's Department, Yours, &c., Alex. Keese.
