The Marquis of Salisbury, who has commenced a political campaign in Scotland, spoke last night in Glasgow to an immense and enthusiastic audience He declares that the House of Lords would never pass the Franchiso Bill unless it also provided for the redistribution of seats. It is rumoured that the Duke of Richmond and Gordon, who were Lord President of the Council in the last Conservative Ministry, has declined Io accept to a request made by Her Majesty that he should negotiate a compromise between the two houses on the Franchise Bill. October 3.
It has been reported that France lias applied to America in connection with China, and endeavored to effect a settlement of the difficulty which exist between the two countries. This rumour is denied by the French authorities, and telegrams from America also discredits its truth. October 5.
The cholera has appeared in Spain, There has been considerable mortality in the town and province at Alicanto, The disease is also very prevalent in many parts of Italy, especially in the city of Naples, where, during the last few days the average mortality has been about 120 cases, with 70 deaths daily, The epidemic continues spreading in Italy, though its intensity in Naples is apparantly diminishing, A terrible panic prevails among the population of the Southern and Central Provinces, and the public services are completly disorganised. Virtual anarchy exists in Calabria, where the people fire volleys at the railway trains and ships approaching the ports, The muiiicipatity of Ancona allow nobody to enter the town unless provided with a certificate of twenty days' residence out of an infected locality. The Orrito town gates are closed against all arrivals, Nearly everywhere the common people accuse the doctors of poisoning, them and spreading the cholera. None unless forced to do so send their sick to the Cholera Hospital, Sydney, October 1,
On Tuesday morning as the Premier was coming into town from his resi dence, he was suddenly seized with illness at the railway station. He was placed in a cab and conveyed to the Government offices, where he was found to be suffering from paralysis ot the left side His speech was not impaired, He was promptly attended to, ani is now improved. It will probably be two or three weeks before he is able to bear moving, and then a long period of rest will be necessary. The greatest sympathy is felt for him, him and a number of telegrams have been received from all parts of this colony and from other colonies. The success of the loan is the subject of much congratulotion, The Land Bill is now passed. The Government resolved to take a determined stand to pass the measure, The steamer Madgree, bound from Sunderland to Sydney, foundered fif-
teen miles north of Port Macquarie. The crew left the ship in three boats, ani arrived safely at Port Stephen. The case in which the labor schooner Forest King is concerned, was resnmed at the Vice-Admiralty Court.. The action is for condemnation and forfeiture of the ship. Defendants on the other hand claim the restoration of the ship and £SOOO damages for detention. Cairo, October 12, The steamer Massifhera, which was despatched in advance up the Nile with a cargo of cables and other gear to be used by the boats in making the passage of the cataracts with the troops, has arrived atDongola. ■. .
