OTARIA AND EAST COAST RABBIT BOARD.
(From the Wairarapa Standard.) A meeting of the Committee of the above Board was beld at the Martinborough Hotel, on Saturday at 2 p.m. Present-Messrs J. Martin, 0. Tully, 0. Phillips, W. McLeod, W. Wratten, and J. McLeod. (Mr Phillips in tho chair).
After confirming the minutes of the last meeting the correspondence was
read from Levin <fe Co,, Meredith, Hawkins, Tally and Orbell, (fee. Mr Orbell's reply (to the request that lie would name the runs he was dissatisfied with), referred the association to his letter of August 25th. An Argns newspaper extract handed in by Mr Horsborough, was then reid and discussed, with regard to the establishment of colonies of cats upon the runs. It appears that it would be necessary to build little stockades in different parts of the run, (say a square pannel of fencing each way) with the walls inclined inward and lined with boards, so as to prevent the cats getting out. The cats should then be fed for a couple of weeks before being let go. It appears no use thinking of turning out domestic cats on a run, unless confined for a time in a whare or stockade, as they are pretty sure to make back to their old haunts,
With respect to Levin and Go's letter: —l. Resolved that all persons requiring ferrets communicate direct with Levin and Co., who will supply, orders to the best of their ability in turn, and as ferrets cannot be obtained at 10s, open orders as to value should be sent,
It was pointed out that ferrets might be got cheaply from England, as they could be put on board the steamers for about 2s Gd a piece—2. Resolved that Levin and Co., agents at Kaikoura, be careful to examine all purchases made there, as to the number of sexes and freedom from disease,
With respect to badgers which are stated to have been turned out in the Whareama3. Resolved that in the opinion of this association it is most inadvisable to introduce badgers into this district, and that a communication be sent to the Colonial Secretary upon the subject. 4, Besolved that this Board, having done all that it could do, during the past season's poisoning now adjourns for three months unless a special meeting be necessary. The Board then adjourned.
