Redwood in 1873, and lsbyTowton (imported) from Warmea by Sir Hercules-Flora Mclvor by Emigrant-Cornelia (imported) by Graßi;hopper—Manto (imported), Towton (own brother to tho Peer and Marchioness) b) Melbourne, from Cinizelli by Touchstone— Brocado by Pantaloon—Bombasine. Seo New Zealand or English Stud Book for Towton or Waimea's ancestors. Such is tho breeding of a direct descendant of one of tho most successful thoroughbred families of modern times, As the dam of Manuka, Toi Toi, Harakeke,_ Totara, Eenga, Papapa, Wainui, Kauri, Waiiti, Rama Rama, aud Puriri, old Wniniea, has indeed left an imperishable name, and it would take a volume to recount the victories gained by the progeny of the old mare, The mention of Puriri's ancestor's' will recall to breeders the victories in this Colony of Manuka, Peeress, Korari, Kakapo,'Long« lands, Papapa, Lacenfeed, Songster, Tarnburini, and a host of others, whilst in Victoria and New South Wales, the excellence of the Melbourne-Sir Hercules' cross shone out in Progress, whose sire, Angler, is from Towton's own sister,' Marchioness, and whoss dam, Coquette, is by Sir Hercules. Claiming close relationship to so many f>reat racehorses it is unnecessary to iio more than briefly mentionThat Waimea was full sister to Zoe, winner of two Australian Champion Races, also to Cossack. Bay Middletnn, Flora, 10, and Nulwifch, tho latter so well known iu this district us a sire That Waimea's siro, Sir Hercules, was also sire of Tho Barb, and Yattendon, the latter for years tho premier stallion of Australasia, who, in his turn, navo us Graud Flamcur, Chester, and scores of other notables, Towton's sister, _ Marchioness, won the English Oaks, and is the diim of Ishhook, Roso of Doumark, Angler, and King of Clubs, the latter is now in tho middle Park Stud, Canterbury. That tho Peer, Towton's brother, is tho siro of Manuka, Peeress, Troy, and Darebin, That Manuka is tho siro of Duchess, winner o! the V.U.C, Handicap, for three and four year olds, beating a good iield, That Towton is the sire of Korari, Tauibourini, Kama Kama, So gstor—sire of Hornby—Atalanta, dam of Pungawerewcro, Waiti, dam of Iris. Unit the Marquis, who won the 2000 Guineas Stakes and St. Lcger, subsequently running Caractacus to a head for the Derby, is now ill the Bnudoora Park Stud where Lurlinc is, and is half brother to Towton, being also a son of Cinizelli, and Biro of the Paintei, Ncwmiuaier, His Lordship, &o. That Puriri as a racehorse amongst our very best performers stood quite in the first rank, winning the JJtmcdin Derby, beating Bribery, Fallacy, Hippocampus, Danebury, Dead Heat, wid Spray, and to quote from the report " having all his field beaten half a mile from home, won hands doivn." Only Dead H-at would oppose him in the Canterbury St, Leger, which Puriri also won in a canter, As an index to the high character Puriri possessed when racing it is only necessary to state that he was handicapped as a four year old to carry the crushing weight of 9st lib in the Canterbury Metropolitan Handicap, 1877,1J miles, and then started at 2to 1 when Templeton, aged, only had 9st 31bs allotted to him, Ariel, Syrs, 9st 81bs, and Foul Play, 3yrs, only carried Gst 71bs. _ Add to Puriii's undoubtedly high credentials for breeding and performances, that he stands over 1G hands with proportionate substance all through, and owners of brood mares can form a fair estimate of the capabilities of the sire placed at their services for the ensuing season-whether for breeding racehorses, hacks, or carriage horses, Puriri has been at the stud three years, and was awarded two first prizes and two champion prizes at Patca, and first prize at Wanganui, also the champion cup for tho best thoroughbied on the ground. Terms.-£44s each mare; two or more by arrangement, payable Ist of January, 1885. Grazin? free till notice. Every care taken but no responsibility.
