DEATH OF FATHER FOREST
(united press association) Napier, September 29th. The Very Rev, Father Forest died yesterday morning. The deceased gentleman, who was in his eightieth year, had been ail.ng for several years, but had always succeeded in performing his priestly duties until about six months ago, when he became completely incapacitated. Father Forest who was a very old colonist, was born at Lyons, France, 1804, ordained priest, 1830, owl was one of the original founders of tho Marist Order 1834, He left London for New Zealand in tho ship London Packet, on 9th Noeember, 1841, the salute announcing the birth of the Prince of Wales being fired as tho London Packet was leaving the docks. Father Forest arrived at Wellington in April 1843, accompanied by the Rev. Fathers Keigniner (Meanee), Lampila (Kaikoura), and other Catholic missionaries, After some delays the party reached tho Bay of Islands, then the centre of the Catholic missions in New Zealand, Father Forest remained about fifteen months at the Bay of Islands, and was then appointed to the charge of tho Auckland district, where he remained until 1859. During his stay in Auckland district he built the Church of St, Patrick, the present oathedral.
